Coronation Street star Helen Worth is leaving the soap opera after 50 years of playing Gail Platt

Massive change is set to hit the Coronation Street cobbles later this year with one of the street's most iconic characters in Gail Platt set to leave with actress Helen Worth stepping down from the role after 50 years.

Worth joined the long-running soap opera back in 1974 as Gail Platt and over those 50 years has also had the surnames Potter, Tilsley, Hillman, McIntyre and the Rodwell that she currently goes by now.

Worth was handed the outstanding achievement award at the British Soap Awards for her portrayal of Gail back in 2014 and 10 years on from that she has decided to leave the role.

Betting odds are now given on how her iconic character will leave the show later this year with a dramatic exit expected as Coronation Street always tends to do when a big character exits.

ITV has described Worth's exit as part of being a "major storyline for the Platt family"

Over the years we've seen Helen Worth's character Gail Platt feature in a number of massive storylines and it's expected to be the same with her exit with ITV bosses saying it will be a "major storyline for the Platt family".

Platt's massive stories over the years included supporting her 13-year-old daughter when she became pregnant, which cause campaign groups to protest against the storyline at the time.

Gail's relationship with serial killer Richard Hillman was also massive with the families kidnapping drew in millions of viewers back in 2003 that caused a power surge for the National Grid during the adverts at the time.

It's unclear how Platt's exit will turn out on the show but what is evident is that it'll be done in classic dramatic Coronation Street fashion.

OLBG also look at odds of what Worth may do next with the 73-year-old 3/1 to go into the I'm A Celeb jungle

Odds are also looked at for what actress Helen Worth could do next with the actress having some free time away from the Coronation Street cobbles for the first time in 50 years.

Heading Down Under to the I'm A Celeb jungle could well be on the cards with ITV bosses surely offering her different roles across their network after her Corrie departure.

Arlene Phillips was the oldest I'm A Celebrity contestant at 78, followed by Stanley Johnson at 77 and Worth would be the third oldest campmate there has been if she heads into the jungle.
