All statistics are for 90 minutes, as this is how the bookmakers always quote the odds, they do not include extra time or penalties.

If we look at the opening games of Euro 2020 we see the following odds, these are the best odds from a range of bookmakers at the time of writing.

In a two-runner race (Over or Under) the true odds are 2.0, but if the bookmakers offered these odds they would not make any money, so they price up and move the odds as money comes in, making sure that whatever the outcome they will make a profit.

The bookmakers also take into consideration the quality of both sides and their penchant for scoring.

You can see that under 2.5 goals are nearly always the shortest price (the favourite).

Over and Under 2.5 Goals Statistics In The EPL

We can see that from the number of games in previous tournaments that ended up under 2.5 goals which were 62%.

You are more likely to see games under 2.5 goals therefore always look for odds as close to 2.0 as possible, check all bookies.

With over 2.5 goals look for odds as close to 2.5 as possible, again shop around.

Remember though the more generous the odds the less likely the bookmakers think an event will happen.

The opening group games can be cagey affairs with teams feeling each other out, often a point is valuable, especially if it is against a group favourite.

You can see that despite our desire for high-scoring games that 2016 was a terrible tournament.

Only 5 games saw more than 3.5 goals.

It will be interesting to view what happens in the upcoming tournament in relation to goals, and whether VAR, smaller crowds, and more teams playing games in their own country affect the over/under statistics.
