Who Could Be The Next Leyton Orient Manager?

We may get some clues before a market is created when we look back at previous appointments and the odds on offer. Ahead of Wellens being appointed the O’s manager had a host of contenders.

Neil Lennon

When Tony Mowbray left Glasgow Celtic in March 2010 Neil Lennon who had been coaching at the club stepped up to be the caretaker manager. He was then appointed full-time manager in the summer, ahead of the new 2010/11 season. In 4 years with the Hoops, he won the SPL three times and the Scottish FA Cup twice. He moved to England and took over at Bolton Wanderers in the autumn of 2014, however, that position did not work out as well and with the club struggling financially he left by mutual consent in March 2016.

From there it was back to Scotland to manage Hibs who he guided back to the SPL from the Championship followed by a return to Celtic Park in February 2019. His second spell went just as well with further trophies. In the 2020-21 campaign, bitter rivals Rangers who had been revitalised under Steven Gerrard left Celtic trailing in their wake, the fans grew restless and Lennon left the club in February 2021.

A 6 month period managing Omonia in Cyprus resulted in them lifting the Cypriot Cup and qualification to the Europa League but the partnership ended in October 2022 after a string of poor results. Since then Neil Lennon has regularly featured in managerial markets including Aberdeen and Salford City.

Jonathan Woodgate

Middlesbrough-born Jonathan Woodgate started his managerial life at home town club in June 2019 in time for the new season. Results were not what anyone had hoped for, with Boro towards the bottom of the Championship.

After just over a year at the helm, Woodgate was sacked. In February 2021, Woodgate was on the South Coast with then Championship side AFC Bournemouth; he stepped up to be the caretaker manager and helped the club into the playoffs with a 6th place finish.

They lost to Brentford over the two legs 3-2, and Scott Parker was brought in to replace Woodgate. He is currently working back at Middlesbrough under manager Michael Carrick.

Luke Garrard

Unlike the other two contenders, Luke Garrard is not such a familiar name to football fans. The reason he was mooted for the Orient job previously was his results in the 2021/22 FA Cup where his team National League side Boreham Wood beat both AFC Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon before losing 2-0 to Everton at Goodison Park.

They held the Toffees at bay for nearly 60 minutes with a well organised performance with the manager receiving plenty of plaudits for his team's performance. He has now been at the Hertfordshire outfit for over seven years and it would not be a surprise if they gained Football League status or a current League 2 club came calling.

Matt Harrold

First team coach Harrold may be in the perfect position to succeed any outgoing manager after already having a short spell as the O’s caretaker boss. He took charge when Kenny Jackett departed and was kept on under Richie Wellens. Orient are flying high as we come to the business end of the current season with Harrold seen as an integral part of this improvement.
