Lionel Messi still odds-on for the award but he's come in from 1/4 to 8/15

Paris Saint Germain player Lionel Messi remains the odds-on favourite to win the 2023 Ballon d'Or award after a massive year in his career.

Messi won the 2022 World Cup with his country Argentina with the final ending up with Argentina beating France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

In recent weeks though we've seen Messi have troubles with PSG having being suspended by the club before that was reversed.

Messi's odds to win the Ballon d'Or in that time have gone from 1/4 to 8/15 now with his chances of winning now 65%.

We look further at the record winners of the Ballon d'Or

The Ballon d'Or award has been presented annually by French news magazine France Football since 1956.

Englishman Stanley Matthews won the first award with 47 votes back in 1956.

The award honours the player deemed to have had the best previous season with voting done by football journalists as well as coaches and captains of national teams.

The all-time record wins for the Ballon d'Or are:

  • Lionel Messi - 7 wins
  • Cristiano Ronaldo - 5 wins
  • Michel Platini - 3 wins
  • Johan Cruyff - 3 wins
  • Marco van Basten - 3 wins
