Raphinha is now the 2/1 favourite to win the 2025 Ballon d'Or award

Barcelona superstar Raphinha has now seen his odds slashed from 14/1 into 2/1 favourite for the 2025 Ballon d'Or with UK Betting Sites after his side sailed through to the Champions League Quarter-Final stage on Tuesday night.

Back at the start of March, Raphinha sat as fourth favourite in the betting market for the prestigious award but he has since shortened massively as the 2/1 market leader.

Bet365's latest market has seen things change right around after the latest night of Champions League action with Liverpool's Mo Salah drifting out to 5/1.

The latest odds now give an implied probability of 33.3% that Raphinha is crowned Ballon d'Or king later this year when the award is handed out in France.

Mo Salah drifts out to 5/1 after Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has now moved from 10/11 favourite to 5/1 in the betting odds to win the Ballon d'Or after his side were defeated by PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

PSG won 1-0 on the night at Anfield in 90 minutes thanks to Ousmane Dembele's goal which took the tie to extra time before the French team eventually won on penalties.

Salah was then seen in tears after the game with the Reds knocked out of the Champions League and his future at Liverpool still unconfirmed.

It looks unlikely now that he will be in the running for the Ballon d'Or award too after his side were knocked out with the market putting him as the third favourite now.

What is the Ballon d'Or?

The Ballon d'Or is the most prestigious individual award in football, given annually to the world's best player.

Organised by France Football since 1956, it is awarded based on performances over the previous season, with journalists, national team captains, and coaches voting for the winner.

History & Evolution

  • Initially, the award was only open to European players playing in Europe.
  • In 1995, it expanded to include all players playing in European clubs.
  • Since 2007, it has been open to players worldwide, regardless of nationality or club location.
  • From 2010 to 2015, it merged with FIFA’s World Player of the Year award to become the FIFA Ballon d’Or but split again in 2016.
