2025 World Athletics Championship: Introduction

Where is the next World Athletics Championship taking place?

The 2027 World Championships is taking place in Beijing, China between the 11th and the 19th of September.

How many medals might Great Britain win at the 2027 World Athletics Championship?

Great Britain and Northern Ireland struggle for medals at World Championships

There must have been a collective sigh of relief in the Great Britain camp when Jake Wightman won a silver medal in the Men's 1500 metres yesterday as the team's failure to register on the medals table up to that point must have been a source of consternation.

Sprinter Amy Hunt doubled Great Britain's medal collection when finishing strongly to take a silver medal in the 200 metres.

Injuries in Tokyo to Pole Vaulter Molly Caudery, defending 1500m World Champion Josh Kerr and Olympic silver medallist in the 400m, Matthew Hudson-Smith, have severely dented Great Britain's hopes of getting near the ten medal haul they achieved at the last World Championships in Budapest.

High hopes are pinned on the Olympic champion in the women's 800m, Keely Hodgkinson, but the twenty-three-year-old athlete has only just returned from a year long absence due to a hamstring injury. The bookmakers are confident Keely can break Great Britain's gold medal dry-spell and make her a very heavy favourite, despite not impressing as much as expected in her semi-final . Teammate Georgia Hunter-Bell is also in the picture for a medal in the same event as is Max Burgin in the men's version of the same race.

Double World Champion Katarina Johnson-Thomson tries again for another medal in the Heptathlon and the British team have four relays to aim at, a discipline that has been a rich source of medals over the years.

  • Great Britain's lowest medal haul in the World Championships came in Edmonton in 2001 when the team came home with just two medals
  • The last time Great Britain did not win a gold medal at the Championships was 2003 in Paris
