The 2024-25 Women's Ashes Preview

The 2024-25 Women's Ashes which although called the '2024-25', is a cricket tournament that will take place fully in 2025 with the first match on the 12th of January running through to the 5th day of the final test match on the 2nd of February.

This will be the 26th edition of the Women's Ashes which were first played in 1934 when England claimed them although there have been large gaps of no series over the years.

The 2024-25 edition will be the eighth under the current format, up until 2011, the Ashes were decided by test matches just like the men's Ashes, but since 2013 it is now a multi-format with ODI's, T20 and a Test Match to decide the winner.

Australia won the Ashes off England in 2015 and has successfully retained them in the four subsequent series so will be looking to retain them for a fifth consecutive series and remain dominant over England.

The Women's Ashes Team Performances

As you can see from the series statistics below, Australia are just edging it overall whilst there have been more series draws than there have been England wins!

Australia have won half of the series played in Australia and for ones played in England, almost half of those have ended in draws.

All Women's Ashes Series (25)

  • Australia 10 (40.0%)
  • England 6 (24.0%)
  • Drawn 9 (36.0%)

Ashes Series in Australia (12)

  • Australia 6 (50%)
  • England 3 (25%)
  • Drawn 3 (25%)

Ashes Series in England (13)

  • Australia 4 (31%)
  • England 3 (23%)
  • Drawn 6 (46%)

Looking at the individual matches played under the multi-format system (since 2013), there has been a total of 49 matches and Australia leads the way with 25 wins to England's 18 (4x draws).

Australia have been dominant on home soil winning 12 of the 21 games, England have only won five times over in Australia but it has been much closer in England with thirteen wins apiece which explains why so many series draws in England.

The Women's Ashes Records

Highest Innings Total

The highest total came under the old test format in 1998 when Australia scored 569/6 declared in their second innings at Guildford, Joanne Broadbent scored 200 off 476 balls and Mel Jones scored 131 off 240 balls and in total they had four players hit 50+.

Under the current format, the highest total has again been from Australia, they scored 473 in the 2023 test match, Annabel Sutherland helping with 137 not out and England's reply of 463 is third on the list, Tammy Beaumont hitting 208 during that innings.

Highest Match Aggregate

That match which was already mentioned when Australia set the second-highest innings total and England set the third-highest not surprisingly tops the highest match aggregate list too.

Those two scores both came in the first innings, Australia added 257 in their second innings and England added 178 which put the match aggregate score at 1,371 runs, one of only four games to see 1,000+ runs.

Highest Win Margin

There have been just five 100+ run victories in the history of this series and Australia has accounted for four of those including the top three.

In 2019 at Canterbury Australia recorded the largest-ever victory of 194 runs, it was the third ODI of the series, they set England 270 to win and then bowled them out for just 75 thanks to a masterclass from Ellyse Perry who picked up a 7-wicket haul.

As mentioned, they have others too, a 186-run victory in 1949, a 161-run victory in 2015 and a 117-run victory in 1985. England's only 100+ win came in 1951 when they beat Australia by 137 runs.

There has never been a 10-wicket victory to date, the closest has been a couple of 9-wicket wins with one apiece, England in 2014 and Australia in 2022.

Lowest Innings Total

There was a test in 1958 that produced the two lowest inning totals! It was the second test which took place in Melbourne and Australia opened up and was bowled out for just 38 runs with Mary Duggan taking seven wickets!

That would have been a dream start for England and sure it could not go wrong, well it went all kinds of wrong as in their first innings they bettered Australia and were bowled out for 35 which is the lowest-ever total, Betty Wilson took seven wickets for Australia in this crazy match!

The majority of the lower scores came in the early days of this series, 47 from Australia in 1934 is third on the list and then 72 from England in 1949 next on the list.

Lowest Match Aggregate

There have only been three matches which have ended with an aggregate of under 200 runs, the lowest of those came in 2013 at Chester-le-Street when England bowled out Australia for 91 in the third T20 and then chased it down to win (92) with the match seeing 183 runs.

The other two saw 194 & 197 runs, the second T20 match in 2015 saw England bowled out for 87 when trying to chase down 107 and then in 2014, again the second T20 match saw Australia successfully chase 99 to beat England.

Lowest Win Margin

Three matches have resulted in wins of five runs or fewer and the lowest two which were both wins by three runs, both came in 2023.

In the second T20 at The Oval, England set Australia 187 to win but then bowled them out for 183 giving them a three-run win.

Just eleven days later Australia returned the favour, setting England 283 to win in the second ODI they bowled the out for 279 giving them a three-run victory.
