FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Preview
2027 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship
The 2027 volleyball tournament will take place in Poland after they were awarded the tournament after a competitive bidding process. The 2029 hosts have also been announced, with Qatar hosting.
Further details of the 2027 tournament are yet to be announced, with the hosting cities to be decided in due course.
Host nations have won a total of four tournaments, and Poland was the last in 2014, but before that, you have to go back to 1966 to find the last winning host, which was Czechoslovakia.
History of the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship
Founded in 1949, the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship did originally since 1962 take place every four years; however, since 2025, it has now changed to every two years, in which a total of thirty-two countries compete for the gold medal.
Like a lot of these tournaments, the early years were dominated by the Soviet Union, which made seven of the first ten tournament finals and, in doing so, went on to win a total of six gold medals.
There have been plenty of back-to-back champions in this tournament. The Soviet Union defended their titles in 1952, 1962 & 1982, Italy defended its titles in 1994, 1998 & 2025, Brazil defended its titles in 2006 & 2010, and Poland defended their title in 2018.

FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Past Winners
As you can see below, plenty of countries successfully retain their titles. Italy won their first title in 1990, and they then returned in both 1994 & 1998 to retain their title for three consecutive tournaments. Brazil repeated that feat in 2002, 2006 & 2010, and then Poland won back-to-back titles in 2014 & 2018.
Italy returned to success in 2022 and then backed that up in 2025, moving them to within one of the record wins (6), and they have now won 50% of the last ten tournaments.
