Group A

Italy had an unblemished record but 20 goals in 2 games against Liechtenstein and 9 in the home game against Armenia leaves only 17 in the 7 more competitive matches. With such dominance in terms of shots and possession, it is hardly surprising that they scored a goal for every 15 minutes of possession. A more interesting statistic is that they averaged 7.3 corners per game.

Switzerland appear to have had a shoot-on-sight attitude. However, with OT at 32% (3rd lowest of qualifiers), xG suggests that there was not the greatest expectancy from many of those efforts, but at 90.91% they still fell short of expectations. An average of 8.5 corners may prove of interest particularly if the match against Italy is an open affair.

Turkey were not prolific in qualifying but only conceded 3 goals. One was in a 1-1 draw away to France who they beat 2-0 at home, where they did not concede at all. Defensively strong, no pushovers, do not expect goals.

Wales have poor figures in general, but therein lies the problem – they made the most of their chances. Only 10 goals in their 8 matches but their OT figure is one of the best. North Macedonia were the only team to average less possession and Hungary the only other team to score less frequently than every 33 minutes of possession.

General. North Macedonia and Hungary were the only sides to average more cards per game than Wales, but Turkey were not far behind. Turkey v Wales will still be a live rubber so maybe a few cards to share between them as the losers would likely to be out of the tournament.

Group B

Group P W D L Goals Shots Average Shots on O T % Corners Corners Average Time in Poss mins
Shots target per game Possess % possession per goal
B Belgium 10 10 0 0 40 207 20.7 92 44.44 87 8.7 62 558 13.95
B Denmark 8 4 4 0 23 139 17.38 50 35.97 51 6.38 57 410 17.84

Belgium scored at least 3 goals in each of their home games, easing off a bit with a brace of 2-0 wins away in a group that contained San Marino, Cyprus, and Kazakhstan. Although Russia scored in both matches against them, they faced few competitive matches. Only England needed fewer minutes of possession per goal, but that was in an arguably easier group. The statistics are therefore probably too unreliable to take at face value.

Denmark had a better minutes per goal record than Portugal or the Netherlands, suggesting they are efficient in possession. They were undefeated in a group where the main competition came from Switzerland and the Republic Of Ireland. With 3 draws and a defeat from those 4 games, the form does not look strong.

Finland proved to be the best of the rest in Italy’s group, losing 2-1 at home and 2-0 away to the Italians. Shy in front of goal, but fairly good at the back apart from a 4-1 defeat in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They were 20th in terms of possession percent, and 18th for corners, but 6th in shots on target. Underestimating them should come with a health warning.

Russia lost both games in their group against Belgium who they meet again here, conceding 7 of their 8 goals in the process, but won the rest. Only Spain and Portugal had higher corners per match figures than Belgium and Russia.

General. The 39 yellow cards and 1 red in 38 matches picked up in qualification compares very favourably with the other groups where group F (50 + 3 cards from 38) is the only other on the right side of 60. Can that last and develop into a low cards group?

Group C

Group P W D L Goals Shots Average Shots on O T % Corners Corners Average Time in Poss mins
Shots target per game Possess % possession per goal
C Austria 10 6 1 3 19 191 19.1 65 34.03 68 6.8 59 531 27.95
C Netherlands 8 6 1 1 24 151 18.88 59 39.07 40 5 65 468 19.5
C North Macedonia 12 6 2 4 15 141 11.75 51 36.17 51 4.25 45 486 32.4
C Ukraine 8 6 2 0 17 110 13.75 42 38.18 34 4.25 54 389 22.87

Austria had done enough to qualify by the time they lost their final game to Latvia. A respectable number of shots per match but a poor on-target figure led to a sparsity of goals. This is confirmed by their Goals/xG % of 73.93, the only team below 80%.

The Netherlands were runners-up to Germany in what was always likely to prove between the pair of them. Respective results against Northern Ireland eventually made the difference. However, they were below Germany in all statistics.

North Macedonia turn up with the worst disciplinary record of the 24 teams, along with a lot of ground to makeup on statistics – but have a recent World Cup qualification victory over Germany to their name.

Ukraine topped a difficult group to qualify. With only 4 goals conceded in 8 games (39.4% of xGA), they took 4 points from their games with Portugal.

General. Judging by some of the disciplinary records, this could literally be a hard-fought group.

The Dutch may be fortunate in that they open against Ukraine who will need to keep a full compliment on the pitch and available for subsequent matches.

Ukraine and North Macedonia were 20th & 22nd in the XG table but when converted to a % of expectations, Ukraine had the best record of all 24 qualifiers in both xGF/GF % and xGA/GA %.

Group D

Group P W D L Goals Shots Average Shots on O T % Corners Corners Average Time in Poss mins
Shots target per game Possess % possession per goal
D Croatia 8 5 2 1 17 142 17.75 47 33.1 59 7.38 61 439 25.84
D Czech Republic 8 5 0 3 13 131 16.38 32 24.43 57 7.13 52 374 28.8
D England 8 7 0 1 37 110 13.75 64 58.18 34 4.25 62 446 12.06
D Scotland 12 5 2 5 17 167 13.92 54 32.34 72 6 51 551 32.4

Croatia have decent possession figures but a relatively disappointing number of shots and a poor on target %. Their xGA figure shows that opponents score more often than expected. However, that is from a small sample so may prove difficult to beat if controlling the game.

Czech Republic do not seem to have much going for them according to the figures. Just 32 shots on target in 8 matches at an average of 24.43% leaves them 24th on both counts.

England dominated a weak group. Only 6 of the qualifiers had fewer shots per match but no team came close in terms of on target figures. A good xGF which could cause issues against better teams. figure but mid-table in xGA

Scotland came through the play-offs, beating both Israel and Serbia on penalties after extra time following their third-place finish behind Belgium and Russia in the group. The play-offs did nothing to improve their attacking figures but when taken into account, they should move Scotland away from the foot of the xGA table.

General. Whatever happens in the first round of matches, both England and Scotland will still be alive in the tournament when they meet in a match that will mean far more than just 3 points in the group. Figures may mean very little here.

Poland conceded just 5 goals in their group but 4 of them were to Slovenia who could only finish fourth. Only average in terms of xGF % but tight at the back against all the other teams leading to a very creditable overall 4th place in the xGA % table.

Slovakia lost 7-1 to Croatia over 2 matches in the qualifying stage, but held their own well in what was a competitive, if not strong, group. They were 22nd in shots and equal 23rd for corners. Although only 23rd for xG in the group, the xG% saw them in third place of the qualifiers.

Spain scored 31 goals in qualifying, but this was against an xG figure of 37.8 which left them 23rd on the xGF % list. Defensively better with an xGA % figure of 56.82. They averaged an incredible 10 corners per match.

Sweden came through the same qualifying group as Spain and were responsible for one of the draws on Spain’s CV. Mid-table for xGF and xGF %, they were 7th on the defensive list, just behind Spain in 6th.

General. While Slovakia appear out of their depth, it may be closer than expected between the other three teams judging by the bare statistics.

Group F

France were free-scoring in qualifying but had a poor xGF % (one of only four below 90%), so restricting their chances could make them vulnerable. An average of 24.5 minutes possession per goal is only mid-table.

Germany boast the best disciplinary record of the 24 qualifiers despite being one of he few to pick up a red card. Minutes of possession per goal at under 15 is third behind England and Belgium. Average shots per game are good as is their xGF %. A sound defence could see them go a long way only conceding 7 goals in total but 6 came in their 2 matches against the Dutch showing they are not infallible against the stronger teams.

Hungary finished 4th in their group and reached this stage via the play-offs. Just 8 of their 13 goals came in the group stage so, although the play-offs will have improved their figures, they may again struggle in this format.

Portugal have good average shot figures, the second best corners figures, and a respectable under 20 minutes possession per goal. Only Germany and Belgium had better discipline in the qualifying round.

General. A tough group from which the winner will have an easier looking last 16 match than the runner-up. However, finishing as one of the best third placed teams may also afford a better last 16 berth than the runner-up. As this will be the final group to complete, potential opponents will already be known.
