The National League South was formed in 2004 and was previously known as the Conference South, the current sponsors are Vanarama.

Alongside the National League North, the division forms the second tier of the National League and is two steps from the English Football League Two.

There are 24 teams (since the 2020/2021 season) geographically ranging from the South of the Midlands including London and Essex.

The National League South champions are promoted to the National League and the second promotion place goes to the winners of the promotion playoffs involving teams finishing 2nd to 7th in the league.
