South Africa Premier Football Format and Past Winners
The PSL was formed in 1996 and there are currently 16 teams competing in the South Africa Premier Division, playing each other once home and away thus completing thirty rounds of fixtures from August through to May.
The league season winners and runners-up qualify to play in the CAF Champions League and the 3rd place team and domestic Nedbank Cup winners qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.
The team finishing bottom of the PSL are relegated to the National First Division and the second bottom (15th) team along with the 2nd and 3rd place in the National First Division enter a playoff series with the winner playing in the PSL the following season.
