3:45 Newcastle Tips

Today’s top bet at Newcastle is Godwinson in the 3:45. Trained by W J Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand, he won last time out and looks well-handicapped in this Class 2 race. Proven at the trip, supported in the market, and from a top stable, he’s primed to follow up with another strong performance.

Superposition is a 4-year-old gelding trained by Ed Dunlop and ridden by P J McDonald. He is 3-1-1 on the AW and makes his AW debut at Newcastle. He was mightily impressive at Kempton last time out under Jason Watson, trotting up by a comfortable 3.5 lengths from the in-form Drifts Away, who had won 5 of the previous 9 races and has since won again at Yarmouth and has risen in the weights from 52 to 78. It would be no surprise to see Superposition continue his good form under a jockey who has ridden 10 out of 62 wins in handicaps for Ed Dunlop. Chance!

Has C&D form and is just 2 lbs above last winning mark. Has been competing respectably in class 2 handicaps and was a good 2nd here earlier in the year behind the progressive Storm Star from this mark.

Boiling Point did not do much last year, but all the runs were in good company, including a listed win. He ended that year with a couple of decent G3 runs, managing a fourth in the last race. He returns today running for a new yard with a drop to C2 and could come straight in with a bang.

The 6-year-old has two 8f C/D wins from his last six starts. Decent run over the C/D when last seen, on Championship Finals Day, not having a great track position in the race. Slightly lower mark now, this race is not as strong, and he will be fresh after a 10-week break.

Ron O normally picks up a few big turf handicaps just after a spell on the AW. It is therefore a concern to see him back on the AW today. However, he is weighted to do well based on his 2nd off 95 in July last year, so a small punt is advised off today's mark of 93. But keep an eye on him on his next few runs on the turf.

This one will be fitter for the last time out run, and they have got the same regular jockey on board. Worth a small each way saver bet.

Local Hero prefers to race behind the leaders and has stall 2. He runs after 33 days off and was beaten 5 lengths at Haydock last time when he probably used himself up too much too soon. His best form comes when sitting off the pace, and he has won twice at this distance before. Trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Simon Hitchcott, he has 33 career runs with 6 wins and 3 places, an 18% win rate and 27% place rate overall. His current handicap mark of 89 looks fair to me, so taking another shot here. He handles the polytrack well and could bounce back with a more patient ride, making him an each-way chance if the pace is solid.
