DragonBet falls under the Playbook Gaming company umbrella. This includes the likes of RhinoBet, PlanetSport Bet, BetZone and a few others. DragonBet is billed as “The bookmaker of Wales”, with a definite push towards Welsh sport and events, on top of the usual selection of markets that you’d expect to find on a UK bookie.

First Impression of DragonBet

By Luke Bradshaw Lee - In this DragonBet review, my first view was in December 2023, so what is on show will reflect this date.

I registered online through their desktop, but downloaded the app also for comparison. The initial thought is that this appears a safe bet. It’s easy to use, with everything feeling in the right place, and no glaring errors in trying to make things overtly different to what punters are used to. Users of BetZone, and Rhino Bet for that matter, will feel at home, given that they also fall under Playbook Gaming, but this is unique enough.

That difference comes from the branding, which in turns leads to some markets that you probably won’t find anywhere else, or if you can, very rarely. Pitching itself as Wales’ premier bookmakers means sports and markets focused on some very niche events.

Within the main menu is “Welsh Events”, which takes you to all markets involving Welsh teams. Everything from Swansea’s next game in the Championship, right down to WRU Championship West fixtures in rugby, plus Welsh political markets and Dominic Dale’s next snooker fixture.

DragonBet Live Betting

On a weekday morning in the UK there is, thankfully, the usual selection of what regular punters would come to expect. So definitely football and tennis, with markets in, cricket and basketball. A quick look around some other bookies at the same time suggests that there isn’t the number of markets others may have, but there’s still a decent offering.

Also, there are more in-play markets on offer than you may initially think. The main in-play section lists the major events, but if you can’t see what you’re after (baseball, in this instance) and navigate there through the A-Z Sports menu down the left-hand side, you do get to some in-play markets.

DragonBet Live Streaming

As it stands DragonBet offers live streaming on horse racing and greyhounds only. This is across desktop, mobile and their app and covers all UK and Irish races and events. It’s definitely worth pointing out that the quality of the stream that I watched was really good.

DragonBet Betting Odds

A look through comparison sites, OddsChecker, and then some deeper dives across bookmakers not listed there, suggests that the odds offered at DragonBet are good. We checked football, racing, rugby and tennis (in-play and pre-match). They’re competitive, and as a punter you’d be happy going with them, but there’s nothing that is market-leading and absolutely grabs you.

DragonBet Betting App or Mobile Site 

This DragonBet review is undertaken across the app, as much as the desktop version. The app is very good, indeed. As a regular bettor, it feels and behaves exactly how you want it to – there are no immediate “why’s it doing that?” or “where do I find that bit?” moments. It’s hard to judge for total novices, but I’d be very surprised if a betting newcomer couldn’t navigate easily through the options and find what they are after. Overall, it’s a real highlight of the product that they offer.

DragonBet Football Betting

A British sportsbook who doesn’t have a decent football section is an immediate red flag and, thankfully, DragonBet doesn’t fall into this category. There is as much as 99% of football punters want in terms of event coverage and market depth. Divided up clearly into sensible sections (UK, European Elite, Rest of Europe, Rest of World etc.), with different markets navigation available underneath bettors can find the markets that they’re after super quickly and with next to no fuss. This doesn’t change across in-play and overall, this looks like an experienced team has put the package together.

On top of that, as mentioned, you’ll find markets for Welsh leagues, with the Cymru Premier League, as well as Wales Cymru North and Wales Cymru South full fixture lists (not even Bet365 do that). Markets are limited to result, handicap and total goals, but that’s still an exceptional point of difference.

Bet Builder 

All games with bet builder available have a small “B” logo displayed underneath, and this can be seen across most games. It’s once you start getting into non-league, or Rest of the World games that this begins to disappear. There’s an absolute load of markets within the feature which is great to see, although one criticism is that they’re not grouped, so it may take a little longer to find “player markets” for example. 

Bonuses

DragonBet runs a generous number of bonuses that are either football-specific, or incorporate football into them. There’s an acca bonus that boosts winnings up to 50% if you’ve staked £5 or more, a loyalty bonus that involves a free weekly £10 bet if you place 10 £10+ bets throughout the week, and a bet builder offer on this evening’s Championship game in which you get half your stake back if your bet loses. All in all, it’s a very satisfying offering.

Cash Out

Cash Out is available at DragonBet (although Partial Cash Out isn’t). It’s a feature that has become an absolute staple of bookmakers, and it’s great to see that here it’s no different. The cash out offered on one of the bets I placed wasn’t amazing, but in truth, that’s par for the course with the feature and it’s very rare to get amazing cash out offers, even at the best of times.

DragonBet Horse Racing

The horse racing section at DragonBet all makes sense. As expected, “Next Off” is front and centre, but it’s easy to scroll across and find all the meets for the day. This goes across the globe, too, not just UK and Irish races. For example, Toulouse and Woodbine were among those on my nav at the time of reviewing. 

Below is an A-Z, with Quick Picks, Build a Racecard and Ante Post options all available. The odds are good, competitive, but as mentioned not the market-leading, although there is BOG (see below). You can live stream all domestic races if you’re logged in, and the small price history data graph is a lovely little touch.

This bookie offers daily racing specials, which is good to see, although there isn’t a load of racing offers/bonuses. DragonBet also offers Best Odds Guaranteed on all UK and Irish races from 10:30am everyday. 

DragonBet US Sports Betting

A full range of American Sports is available . Even though the MLB isn’t in season, it’s good to see their outright markets and futures there, alongside global leagues (South Korean and Japanese baseball, for example).  

American Football Betting

UK bookmakers can sometimes “Anglicise” American sports in an attempt to make them seemingly more attractive to UK users, and it never works. One example is just posting the moneyline odds for games on the main page, but I’m pleased to report DragonBet doesn’t fall into this trap. 

Moneyline is obviously there, but it sits alongside the spread and totals, as it should. You want the three main markets listed from the off. Game markets look good overall, but only for teams. There is a distinct lack of player props, and that goes for outrights also. Case in point, I couldn’t find odds for the Heisman Trophy, or any DPOY, or MVP odds, all of which is a glaring miss.

Basketball Betting

As well as the NBA, DragonBet covers a wide range of EuroLeague and domestic world competitions, which is great to see. At the time of writing there are markets for China, Great Britain, Poland and Croatia. The NBA season is in full swing,with plenty of futures and outrights regarding division winners, plus a good selection of markets in each match-up. As with American football, however, there are no player props or futures.

Keep tabs on the top basketball betting sites though, to see if they make it onto our list.

Baseball Betting

DragonBet’s baseball section is adequate. Across its US sports markets it's the same story in a lack of player bets. There’s nothing for Player Bases, Hits, Walks Issued, Strikeouts etc or any player prop market which is frustrating. The markets that they do have for games is decent aside from that, but nothing to write home about.

Ice Hockey Betting

The NHL takes up the majority of the real estate here, as expected. But there is also some British and German fixtures included. One nice touch, and something I’ve noticed across a few sports (definitely American football and basketball) is either club logos or, even more useful in in-play betting on sports you may not know tonnes about, is teams’ uniforms next to their names. It’s a lovely little detail.

DragonBet Greyhound Betting

You can live stream greyhound racing on DragonBet (alongside horse racing). They have a full offering of UK and Irish races, and of the 14 different meets I saw, 12 of them featured live streaming (all clearly visible with a green play icon on each). You can sort through quick picks, build a racecard or go through their ante post markets.

DragonBet Darts Betting

In terms of darts betting sites in the UK, DragonBet is great. There are markets for the European Tour, and Modus Series, with outrights on the PDC World Championships, still months away. 

There are plenty of options in-play, with odds changing swiftly. It’s good to know that the site and its odds are properly reflecting the action going on in what is a European Tour match. 

DragonBet Snooker Betting

by Steve Madgwick - I am always on the lookout to determine which are the best snooker betting sites. At the time of writing there are markets for the five different tournaments, including the World Championships, Masters and UK Championship.

On top of that, the odds look great, and that goes for outrights on next year’s World Championships, as well as upcoming matches in the International Championship qualifiers. 

That’s the good news. The downside is the lack of markets. For one selected match DragonBet has result, handicap markets, total frames and correct score. 

I can’t see anything for centuries, highest breaks, Race to (frames) or any more novelty bets like Odd/Even total frames etc. which means that there are fair few other sites who can offer more.

DragonBet Rugby Betting (Union & League)

Of course there are Six Nations outrights, alongside the Gallagher Premiership, Champions Cup, URC and Top 14. But, crucially, you can bet on the WRU Premiership, as well as the WRU Championship East and WRU Championship West. There isn’t another bookmaker in the country offering markets on those games.

This makes up for the fact that odds aren’t brilliant. Good enough to bet generally, but not the longest that you’ll find.  from a sportsbook. There does need to be more markets per match, but the odds that they do have are good when compared to our best Rugby betting sites.

DragonBet Cricket Betting

by James Banting - In terms of the cricket on offer and DragonBet it’s a little up and down. Of the markets that they do have the odds are pretty good, definitely enough to keep me interested. The issue is that there aren’t as many markets as I would really like to see. 

There are some outrights on the Cricket World Cup and The Ashes, plus some markets for ODIs and Caribbean Twenty20. Betway currently tops our Best Cricket betting site right now, with huge market depth, great odds and lots of promotions, so perhaps DragonBet can follow their lead and up their offering. 

DragonBet Tennis Betting

By James Banting - The tennis betting at DragonBet is pretty good overall. Across the site it’s definitely one of the better sports in terms of in-play coverage, and incudes a live tracker with match stats once you’ve clicked through to the match’s markets. The odds are good, especially the in-play ones. 

There could be more events offered, and more market depth, but based on what is there it’s definitely above average. There aren’t any tennis promotions, or even bet boosts, so that’s definitely something that would raise them in my eyes. If they could add in more markets, and some tennis-specific promotions, they’d definitely be closer to getting into the top 10 tennis betting sites on OLBG.

DragonBet Golf Betting

By James Banting - Current events look great, with smaller competitions listed among odds for the majors, Ryder and Solheim Cups and LIV tournaments. I really like the leaderboard for in-play events, with play by play info displayed that is better than most. On top of that, you can select specific holes, see their layout, and how the current players on that hole are going round. Generally, it’s all pretty excellent, and I’ll be coming back.

DragonBet Motorsports Betting

Of course, the F1 grand prix takes centre stage, understandably as we’re still in the middle of the season, and Formula 1 has its own title on the navigation, as is typical of most UK sportsbooks. The “Motor Sport” tab is where you’ll find everything else, including Speedway, Superbikes, Supercars and NASCAR (Cup Series, Truck Series and Xfinity Series all in there). F1 is particularly deep, with plenty of markets and driver specials for the upcoming Grand Prix.

DragonBet Boxing Betting

By Frank Monkhouse former professional boxer - There’s plenty of boxing matches to get stuck into here, and markets look dependent on timings. Those this weekend and over the next few weeks have a decent offering, whereas the further away they get the less markets on offer. That’s understandable, and I wouldn’t expect to find round by round and the like for fights that are months away. Overall, I like what DragonBet is doing, even if there is a little bit of room for improvement. 

DragonBet Other Sports Betting

Whilst these sports might sound very niche, there is a massive market for fans, and millions of them in the UK, so good coverage of niche sports and events is key to be reviewed on OLBG; let’s dig in a bit further.

Handball Betting

Betting on handball at DragonBet looks quite basic. The Champions League has just finished so there’s a bit of a lull in the sport right now, but DragonBet only lists a few other fixtures. What is nice to see, and not something everyone does, is the Womens World Championships. Handball is increasingly popular and DragonBet looks to be struggling in terms of providing a platform for punters to bet on various handball events and tournaments worldwide. 

Cycling Betting

DragonBet offers betting on cycling for sports bettors who like to dabble in cycling betting, and comparing it with others out there it’s what we’d expect. There isn’t a load of markets, but that’s true of anywhere to be honest. What you can get is odds on next year’s Tour de France winner.

Aussie Rules Football

There isn’t a big market for betting on Aussie Rules in the UK, but it’s worth factoring in that there are few, if any, sports that rival the statistics on offer for the most intense, fast-paced sport south of the equator - AFL betting is available for at DragonBet, and it’s actually covered pretty well. Both the men’s and women’s AFL competitions are covered, although there’s nothing below that. In games themselves, there’s result, margin betting, half time, quarter markets and a few others.

Political Betting

By Nigel Skinner - At the time of this DragonBet review, there is a decent enough, well-covered area in terms of political betting. Ordered by date, there are British by-elections covered, next year’s General Election, US Presidential election and the London Mayoral election. You’d get a few more markets elsewhere but this is definitely enough to keep people interested. 

Continuing the Welsh focus, you can get odds on the next leader of the Welsh Labour Party. There are a decent array of political betting options for punters interested in political betting to participate and enjoy the experience.

At first I thought DragonBet didn’t have any virtual betting options (I typed “virtual” in the search bar with no success), but then I saw it had its own header in the main navigation, alongside Sports, and Tips. There’s actually loads to bet on: races, EuroLeague Basketball, football, golf, greyhounds – whatever takes your fancy. This is a strongpoint

Casino

DragonBet does have casino. Despite the name of the brand, it's incredibly easy to find their casino offering from their sportsbook, with banned across the top. DragonBet Account Opening Process

A reassuringly easy process. At the top-right of the screen DragonBet has their “Sign Up” button. Bettors just need to select this and follow the simple steps as guided through. You’ll be asked for the usual information – name, date of birth, address etc – and once complete be sent a verification email. Clicking this from your inbox will redirect you to the site, and then you’re free to get betting.

Navigation and user experience [desktop v mobile]

The navigation, and the general app design is very good. You can look at it two ways: as a complete betting novice, or as an experienced bettor who has accounts elsewhere. 

For the former, everything would feel intuitive. There’s a menu of sports down the left hand side, and offers down the right, with the main panel of markets front and centre. If you're struggling or lost at any point, there’s a search function in the top left of the screen that will allow you to immediately find where you’re going (or see that it's not there and stop your search).

For the experienced bettor, everything will feel familiar. There’s no attempt to jazz things up for the sake of being different – this is how you’d want it, and what you’ll be used to from a number of other sportsbooks.

Placing a bet

This section should only really highlight if there are issues, as the process is almost identical on every site. Within a few minutes of signing up to DragonBet I placed a couple of bets on different sports, one of which took advantage of the welcome offer, and I used their bet builder feature, which was very indeed. 

Managing your account

As mentioned above, the design really makes this tick. On the desktop version, it’s stuff left and right of screen (menu and search to the left, account and bets to the right). On the app, it’s top and bottom, with search, account and bets at the top, with a main nav bar at the bottom that can get you to different sports, in-play options and casino (plus return to the home page).

I haven’t experienced any issues logging in, or finding customer service options, either. Overall, it feels like DragonBet has got this part nailed.

DragonBet Responsible Gambling Features

I’ll be honest, I really struggled to find any tools to help with responsible gambling – things like limits and time-outs etc. At the bottom of every page there is a Responsible Gambling area, with external links to GamStop, Be Gamble Aware, GamCare and a few others, which is good to see. There does seem to be a lack of in-house support, however.

All are explained in further detail on their safer gambling page. As well as this, on the same page they list links to the likes of the National Gambling Helpline, Be Gamble Aware and the National Gambling Treatment Service.

DragonBet Review Summary 

The UK betting industry is a saturated thing, and it is very difficult for new bookies to stand out. That’s not something that you can level at DragonBet.

Backing yourself as “The Bookmaker of Wales” means you have to prove it, and they do. There aren’t many bookmakers who can genuinely say that they are the only bookies in the country to do a specific thing. In rugby and football, especially, but other sports also, you can find markets here that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s the only place where you can bet on the Ardal Leagues in football and WRU Championship on rugby.

Generally the odds are fine, but there’s nothing that really stands out as great value, and the same could be said for the welcome offer, specifically. On top of that, some sports simply aren’t there, like volleyball or, more surprisingly, esports. That seems a glaring miss. Overally, it’s a solid effort however, but there’s definitely improvements that could be made.

The in-play options on some of the sports have good graphics and supporting stats – golf and tennis, in particular – while some sports are covered really well market/odds wise, such as darts and snooker, and the offers are decent. Lastly, the virtual sports offering is very good.

Overall, DragonBet is a bookie that does things no one else does, and how many other bookies in the country can say that?
