2026 Formula 1 Constructors Championship Preview

McLaren ended their long wait for a constructors' title in 2024, having last won it in 1998 under Coulthard & HΓ€kkinen and then, like buses, picked up back-to-back titles, winning it in 2025 also.

We have some changes to the constructors for 2026, with Audi coming in to replace Sauber, who have left the sport, and Audi will be using their own power unit.

2016 was the last time that we had eleven teams, twenty-two drivers on the grid, and that is back for 2026, with Cadillac joining the grid, who will be using a Ferrari power unit.

Honda is no longer supplying power units to Red Bull and instead will supply them to Aston Martin for 2026, a team that will now be led by Adrian Newey for this season.

Both the Red Bull teams will now use Red Bull Ford power units, the first time Ford has been part of F1 since 2004, whilst Alpine will now be using Mercedes power units, with Renault pulling the plug.

Regulation Changes

For the new F1 season, one major change is the removal of DRS, which is to be replaced with Z-mode and X-mode of a manual override engine mode. X-mode is more or less a like-for-like replacement of DRS, whilst Z-mode can be used in corners for more downforce.

The power units are moving more towards electrical energy, with a 50-50 split this season, with internal combustion. We will also lose the MGU-H, which was heat energy, with MGU-K being used more, kinetic energy.

The cars are being reduced in size, also making them lighter, with the aim of cars being able to follow others much more easily. Whether or not that will be the case is another thing!

Lando and Oscar went on to win five of the opening six races, and after those six races had already opened up a lead of over one hundred points with Mercedes in second spot.

After a poor race in Canada, the team bounced back with five straight wins, and after fifteen rounds, they led the championship by 324 points with Ferrari now in second spot.

It was good that they had built up such a strong lead because after the Dutch Grand Prix, they only managed to pick up two wins in nine races, but they were still scoring well despite not winning.

It was in Singapore, round 18, that they confirmed the successful defence of their title with six rounds to spare. They led from the first race to the last, never giving up first place and landing their 10th constructors' title by 364 points over Mercedes.
