Released on the 21^st of May 2024, the Loner slot is a bit all over the place thematically. To me personally, it has an 80s, nostalgic, TV feel. The game is based on a loner character (Bob Bobsburg) who is overweight, unhealthy, unloved, and has a pizza slice in one hand and a telly remote in the other.

NLC follows this troubled man’s story as he hears the TV speak back to him in ways you cannot imagine. Pretty odd right? The setting is Bob’s living room specifically in front of a big 80s-style TV. For younger readers, they were huge and weighed an absolute tonne.

With the reels set inside the TV, you’ll notice a VHS player sitting on top of it. When the game fires up on the TV, you’ll see it’s presented by “C.O.C.K TV” with a statement saying that no rubber ducks, pizza slices, or British young men were harmed in the making of this game. The soundtrack is pretty generic with TV advert voiceovers playing as you spin the reels.

On the reels, you will see A, K, Q, J and 10 royals which look like random notes. The higher-value symbols include Reel Duck Tape (Rubber Duck), Order 1 for 2 (a TV remote), It’s Cardiolicious (a pizza slice), Banging Deal!! (a bomb) and loner character Bob Bobsburg. The loner symbol pays the most rewarding you with 5 times your total bet for 5 in combination.

Loner comes with a variety of special symbols. There is a Wild symbol which looks very much like the MTV logo upside down. It substitutes for all paying symbols above. There are 2x2 or 3x3 Amber Big Wilds and a Monitor Scatter which is key to bringing in other symbols (xSplit, Infectious xWays and Max Win) as well as triggering bonus features. Before I look at the bonus features, here is a list of symbol payouts and functions:

Big Wilds 

Look out for 2x2 or 3x3 Amber Big Wild symbols. These can land fully stacked or partially on reels 2, 3 and 4 (the 3 middle reels) randomly on any spin. If an xSplit symbol lands, it splits the Big Wild on all affected positions.

Monitor Scatters

The Monitor Scatter symbol can land on reels 1, 3 and 5. If only 1 or 2 Monitors land, they will reveal 1 of the following symbols:

• Wild: a regular 1x1 Wild symbol.
• xSplit: Splits all other symbols left and right and doubles the value of that symbol. It also turns a Wild during a split but won’t split Monitor Scatters.
• Infectious xWays: Transforms into a standard paying symbol of size 2-4. This infects all instances of that symbol turning them into size 2-4. Infected symbols can also be split by the xSplit.
• Max Win: This awards the game’s maximum win of 14,999 x your total bet.

If you’re lucky enough to land 3 Monitor Scatters, you’ll play the Pin The Win, Tick Tick Boom or Shoot Shoot Duck features or award the Max Win (14,999 x bet). Below are details on the bonus features:

Pin The Win

In the Pin The Win feature, the Pin The Win logo moves around the game area. When it lands on a corner, the win show is awarded with the feature ending. Any other position awards a random win multiplier. The amounts are as follows:

• Corner: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,000 x bet or Max Win (14,999 x bet)
• Any other position: 1 to 500 x bet

Tick Tick Boom

The Tick Tick Boom feature sees a target chosen to be blown up. This will reward you with a prize ranging from 5 to 1,000 times your total bet or the Max Win of 14,999 x bet.

Shoot Shoot Duck

In the Shoot Shoot Duck feature, you begin with 5 shots. Your aim is to shoot the ducks to win prizes:

• Symbols: Awards a prize of 1 to 1,000 x bet
• Bomb: Collects all visible awards when shot
• Ammo Clip: Increases shots back up to 5
• Van: Increases its value each step by collecting all visible awards in the game area
• Max Win: Award Max Win of 14,999 x bet

The feature ends when there are no shots left or the Max Win has been awarded.

Nolimit Booster

With the Nolimit Booster feature, you can buy specific xBet features. There are 2 options:

• xBet: costing 50% more per spin, you are guaranteed a Monitor Scatter on reel 1.
• Double xBet: costing 30 times your total bet, you are guaranteed a Monitor Scatter on reels 1 and 3.

Nolimit Bonus

As with other Nolimit City games, the Loner slot comes with an optional Nolimit Bonus feature for non-UK players. With the options below, you can buy your way directly into various bonus features. Costing between 75 and 2,604 times your total bet, here are the details:

If you opt of the Lucky Draw option, you’ll have a 60%, 30% or 10% chance of playing the Tick Tick Boom, Pin The Win or Shoot Shoot Duck features respectively. With the Lucky Draw Deluxe option, there is a 60%, 30% or 9% chance with 1% for God Mode.

With the God Mode feature, the Monitor Scatters may reveal M, A and X symbols which will collectively award the maximum win of 14,999 times your total bet. With all options, the RTP rate remains unaffected.

Offering a unique and controversial theme, the Loner slot takes you back to the 80s. Appealing to older players, I love the nostalgic feel with references to MTV, big/clunky TVs, VHS players and cheesy commercials.

Based on the lonesome Bob Bobsburg character, I feel it’s quite reflective of today’s society where many are overweight, unhealthy, marginalised and on their own (known as the Men Going Their Own Way movement). It follows on from other Nolimit City slots such as Gluttony, Walk of Shame and Rock Bottom.

In terms of the gameplay, there are Amber Big Wilds which can reach 3x3 in size (and can be split). Monitor Scatters are key as they can add wilds, xSplit and Infectious xWays symbols to the reels as well as award the maximum payout. Infectious xWays feature in other NLC games including Karen Maneater by the way.

Landing 3 will see you play 3 bonus features or win the max win. With the 3 main bonus features, all of them award bet multiplier prizes. The good news is that all of them can award the 14,999 x bet maximum win. My favourite is the Shoot Shoot Duck feature as you shoot the ducks to win various prizes.

With a multitude of bonus features and extras, the Loner slot has plenty to offer. Whilst the win potential isn’t as high as other NLC slots, the entertainment factor cannot be ignored. If you’re located outside the UK, the range of Bonus Buy options is abundant. The God Mode from Nine to Five and Brick Snake 2000 is available but costs 2,604 x your total bet. It can reveal M, A and X symbols to award the max win or not.  

In summary, the Loner slot is fun, entertaining and is unique thematically. With decent win potential, the commentary throughout really stands out for me. As mentioned, it does have a nostalgic feel but it is quite indicative of the lives many people lead nowadays.

If you want something more extreme, I recommend the Kenneth Must Die slot by Nolimit City. With a BDSM theme, it follows Kenneth who has a double life filled with wild parties, kinky hookups, gimp suits and funerals. With 69,000 times bet max wins, this is a censored version and a 10,000 x bet version.
