Hounds of Hell Expert Review
Theme, Audio + Symbols
The Hounds of Hell slot has a horror theme as you descend into the underworld. According to Hacksaw Gaming, “death reigns over scorched earth and fires rage to the rhythm of war drums” as you prepare to face vicious creatures. It follows a long line of horror-themed games by Hacksaw Gaming such as Evil Eyes, SixSixSix and Klowns.
Back to the game: it’s based on mythical dogs who are servants or guardians of hell, the devil or the underworld. With a mythology feel, the setting is dark and has a red colour to depict hell. With hellhounds either side of the grid, the soundtrack is intense and eerie.
On the 5x5 grid, you’ll come across A, K, Q, J and 10 royals. The higher-value symbols are Eldritch symbols with the Seven-Pointed Star the most lucrative. It awards 50 times your total bet for 10 or more anywhere on the grid.
Hounds of Hell comes with several other special symbols including Hellhound cash prize multipliers, Hellfire Orbs and FS Scatters. You’ll find out more on these below in the Bonus Features section.
Hounds of Hell Mobile
With all Hacksaw Gaming slot games being ‘mobile-first’, Hounds of Hell is available to play on desktop, mobile and tablet devices. Compatible with iOS and Android smartphones, you’ll use a special Portrait Mode when playing on a handheld device to optimise the vertical space better.
Bonus Features
The Hounds of Hell slot game has 8 bonus features. With Cascades for continuous wins, it’s all about Hellhound symbols which spread upwards to award adding or multiplying bet multipliers that are added and awarded at the top of the column. With Roaring Packs, there are 2 free spins features which offer increase chances of landing Hellhounds and Hell Reels which guaranteed Hellhound symbols on every free spin.
Cascades
When you land a winning outcome (6 or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid), the Cascade feature is activated. The winning symbols disappear with the remaining symbols falling down to occupy the empty positions. New symbols then fall in to hopefully give you another winning outcome.
Hellhounds
Look out for Hellhound symbols which are bet multiplier prizes. With only 1 Hellhound symbol appearing on a column at a time, they spread and are collected before being multiplied by your bet. At the end of each spin, Hellhound symbols spread to the top of their respective column: they then display a multiplier value.
All multipliers are collected bottom-to-top, left-to-right, and displayed above each corresponding column. The bet multiplier values above each column are added together and multiply your bet to determine your final win. However, there are 2 types of Hellhound symbols:
- Adding Hellhound Symbols: Added to the current total at the top of the reel, values range from 1 to 50x.
- Multiplying Hellhound Symbols: Multiplying the current total at the top of the reel, values range from 2x to 10x.
Roaring Packs of Hell
When 2 or more Hellhound symbols appear on adjacent columns and on the same row, they form a Roaring Pack with their possible bet multiplier values increased. Hellhound symbols that spread from a Hellhound that is part of a Roaring Pack are also counted as pack of the pack.
Below are the possible bet multiplier values that can appear on Hellhound symbols that are part of a Roaring Pack:
- Adding Hellhound Symbols: 5 to 100 x bet
- Multiplying Hellhound Symbols: 3 to 20 x bet
If a Hellhound symbol has been part of a Roaring Pack, it remains part of the pack even if it is separated and ends up on a different row due to winning symbol cascades.
Hounds are Loose
The Hounds are Loose feature is triggered randomly on a spin once the grid is settled with no new Scatter Pays wins formed. When it triggers, all low-value royal symbols are removed with new symbols dropping in to fill the grid. With the possibility of activating multiple times per spin, there is a higher chance of Hellhound symbols appearing.
Bonus Gamble
When you trigger a bonus feature, you have the choice to play the feature or gamble. If you opt to gamble, you will pick from 5 Hellfire Orbs. Choosing up to 3 Hellfire Orbs, each Hellfire Orb contains between 2 and 10 free spins or a Bonus Upgrade is you land the What the Hell! Bonus feature. This will activate the Who Let the Hounds Out?!? Bonus feature with 10 free spins.
What The Hell!
Hounds of Hell comes with a What the Hell! Bonus feature. It’s activated by landing 3 FS Scatter symbols simultaneously during a base game spin. Using the same mechanics as the base game, all Hellhound bet multiplier values are kept above the columns until the end of the feature. Once the feature ends, all collected bet multiplier values are added together are awarded.
Furthermore, the Hounds are Loose feature is guaranteed to trigger after 3 non-winning free spins in a row. A non-winning free spin one is that has no standard symbol wins or without Hellhound symbols. Landing 2 or 3 FS Scatter symbols will reard you with 2 or 4 extra free spins, infinitely.
Who Let The Hounds Out?!?
The Who Let the Hounds Out?!? Bonus feature is triggered by landing 4 FS Scatter symbols during a base game spin. With 10 free spins awarded, it plays out like the base game but there are persistent Hell Reels. You’ll also benefit from a more lucrive Hounds are Loose feature.
When a Hellhound symbol lands on a column for the first time, that reel transforms into an activated Hell Reel. Basically, a Hellhound symbol is guaranteed to land on each activated Hell Reel on every free spin.
Unlike the base game, Hellhound bet multipliers are added together and paid at the end of each free spin with the total bet multipliers above each reel reset to 0 between free spins. Finally, landing 2 or 3 FS Scatter symbols will reward you with 2 or 4 extra free spins.
Bonus Buy
As expect, non-UK players can opt for the Bonus Buy feature in the Hounds of Hell slot game. With 4 options, below is a table highlighting all the details as well as the RTP rate (for the highest RTP setting):
Feature | Description | Cost | RTP Rate |
---|---|---|---|
BonusHunt Featurespins | 5 x more likely to trigger a bonus feature | 3 x bet | 96.24% |
Howling FeatureSpins | Guaranteed 3+ Hellhound symbols | 60 x bet | 96.24% |
What the Hell! | 10 free spins | 100 x bet | 96.18% |
Who Let the Hounds Out?!? | 10 free spins | 250 x bet | 96.26% |
Expert Verdict

Hounds of Hell is a horror-themed slot focusing on spreading Hellhound bet multipliers. With 2 free spins features, the most lucrative awards bet multiplier prizes after each free spin and guarantee Hellhound symbols with Hell Reels. This can lead to 20,000 x bet max wins on each spin.
As mentioned, the Hounds of Hell slot is another game with a horror theme by Hacksaw Gaming. Graphically, it’s superb with the hellhounds overseeing proceedings. If you want something softer with a tongue-in-cheek feel, Hacksaw offers plenty of options such as Donut Division and Le Viking.
The game focuses on Hellhound symbols which either add or multiply bet multipliers. When they land on a column, they spread upwards. The totals are then collected at the top of the respective column(s). If you get a multiplying Hellhound symbol at the top of the column, it will multiply all values beneath it when can really build up the total bet multiplier for that column.
With the Hounds are Loose feature removing low-value symbols from the grid, there are 2 free spins features. You can opt to gamble for more free spins but could end up with less too. In the What the Hell! Bonus feature, Hellhound bet multipliers value remain above the columns and progressively increase throughout the feature.
I quite like the Who Let the Hounds Out?!? Bonus feature as bet multiplier prizes are awarded after each free spin. Even though they reset after each free spin, landing Hellhound symbols early on will award Hell Reels. These guarantee Hellhound symbols landing on each subsequent free spin. I also found the Cascades can play a big part as they push down the Hellhound symbols down the grid which then spread further and award more bet multiplier prizes.
With 20,000 times bet max wins, the Hounds of Hell slot can surely pack quite the punch if the spreading bet multipliers land frequently and low down on their respective columns. This positions this game at the top end when it comes to max win potential. Overall, it’s another solid effort from Hacksaw Gaming which is sure to appeal to many. If you want big win potential, Hacksaw’s Chaos Crew 2 also offers 20,000 x bet payouts.
If you like Hounds of Hell’s theme, I recommend playing the top horror slots such as Serial, Mental and Disturbed by Nolimit City and Darkness and Dreadworks from Print Studios. You can find them all in OLBG’s guide to the best Halloween slots:
