OLBG Cheltenham Preview Night Delivers Strong Festival Fancies

All eyes are now on Cheltenham Festival week and OLBG got ahead of the curve by hosting a packed Cheltenham Preview Night at Newbury Racecourse on Thursday 5th March.

Hosted by OLBG Ambassador Ella McNeill, the expert panel featured Harry Derham, Daryl Jacobs and Sam Turner, who offered race-by-race insight, NAPs and value selections for the four-day Festival.

With Cheltenham betting odds tightening by the day, several strong opinions emerged, including confident calls in the Supreme, Champion Chase and Albert Bartlett.

Supreme & Champion Hurdle Focus

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Harry Derham was emphatic:

“Old Park Star is a cut above… I think he’ll win, quite impressively. Old Park Star is the NAP of the Tuesday.”

Old Park Star clearly heads the Derham shortlist, while Might Park was noted as interesting but harder to back on current form.

Champion Hurdle

Sam Turner sided with Alexei each-way, suggesting the race may lack tactical gears:

“If you can get three places… he’s very talented and he’s my NAP on the Tuesday.”

Harry Derham and Daryl Jacobs both highlighted Golden Ace at 8/1 as standout value.

Daryl made a notable point:

“If Golden Ace was trained by Nicky Henderson or Willie Mullins, there’s absolutely no way she’d be 8/1. She’s the value bet.”

With multiple panel members aligned on price angles, the Champion Hurdle looks one of Tuesday’s key betting heats.

Champion Chase & Gold Cup: Majborough the Banker?

Champion Chase

Harry Derham was crystal clear:

“Majborough. He’s so much better than this lot… This will be all over about halfway around.”

Sam Turner suggested Quilixios each-way as a value alternative, particularly given his Cheltenham form and freshness record.

Gold Cup

Sam Turner sided with Gaelic Warrior:

“Going back to Cheltenham suits him ideally.”

But Daryl Jacobs couldn’t ignore last year’s dominant force:

“I can’t see past Galopin Des Champs. Last year he was odds-on - he couldn’t be beaten. Now we're overlooking him”

Further Plays

Stayers’ Hurdle

Daryl: Bob Olinger

Ella McNeill (NAP): Ma Shantou - “I'm surprised he's the price he is.”

Brown Advisory

Sam: Wendigo - “Very sweet on him.”

National Hunt Chase

Daryl: Newton Tornado - Rebecca Curtis’ “best chance of the week.”

Triumph Hurdle

Harry: Apolon De Charnie (40/1) - “Peak Willie if he wins.”

Champion Bumper

Harry: No Walkover each-way (66/1) - “Shouldn’t be 66/1.”

Across the week, the panel blended short-priced confidence with lively outsiders

Strong Confidence in Turner’s & Albert Bartlett

Turner’s Novices’ Hurdle

Harry Derham was glowing about No Drama This End:

“He’s an absolute joy. I just think he’s better than them.”

Daryl Jacobs countered with an each-way alternative in I’ll Sort That, highlighting stamina and race suitability.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Derham again spoke with authority:

“Doctor Steinberg will win the race… He’s better than all of these. He’ll win and win well.”

Daryl offered a lively outsider at 28/1:

“King’s Bucks. Very talented horse… Fill your boots!”

For those scanning Cheltenham betting odds, these races produced some of the most confident panel statements of the night.

Final Verdict from Newbury

The panel wrapped up the night by giving their best bets of the week.

Daryl Jacobs: Bambino Fever, DinoBlue

Harry Derham: Regent’s Stroll, Majborough, Mighty Park, Old Park Star (Win Yankee)

Sam Turner: Ma Shantou, Electric Mason

Harry was particularly strong on Regent’s Stroll in the Jack Richards Novices’ Chase:

“Paul Nicholls said he’s one of the best he’s ever had. He’ll win.”

That confidence could see significant movement in Cheltenham betting odds before declarations close.
