Colchester sacked their head coach Ben Garner this weekend after four successive defeats in the league saw them slide down to second bottom in the table.

Now though they need someone to take over who can guide them to safety in League Two this season with the U's looking to avoid relegation to League Two for the first time since 1992.

BetVictor's latest betting odds put Matthew Etherington as the 1/2 favourite to move from the club's U21's side to the first team spot with the club potentially keeping their next appointment in-house.

Etherington has been the U21's lead coach at Colchester United since June this year with his only full managerial role in football so far seeing him sacked by Crawley Town after just 32 days in charge.

What the expert says...

Matthew Etherington is now the clear favourite to be the next manager of Colchester United with the former Premier League player currently the U21s head coach at the club. The appointment would be an easy one for the U's board as they can keep it in-house!

Colchester sacked head coach Ben Garner this weekend after their 2-1 defeat to Harrogate

Colchester United decided to sack head coach Ben Garner after Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Harrogate left them second-bottom of the League Two table.

Garner had been in charge for 28 games and won just 7 of them after seven months in total in charge of the U's and their performances had been poor in recent weeks.

Losses in their last four games in a row includes a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Forest Green last weekend which to many was the final straw but it got worse with Saturday's loss to Harrogate.
