McIlroy’s Masters Triumph Propels Him to SPOTY Favouritism

Rory McIlroy’s stunning win at The Masters has shaken up the betting market for the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, with the Northern Irish golfer now a strong 1/2 favourite with William Hill to lift the SPOTY trophy in December.

The victory at Augusta completed McIlroy’s career Grand Slam, a feat only a handful of golfers have ever achieved.

UK Betting Sites reacted immediately, cutting his odds into 1/2 giving him a 66% implied probability of winning the award.

This would be McIlroy’s first SPOTY win despite several nominations over the past decade with the Golfer previously distancing himself from the ceremony.

What the expert says...
McIlroy completing the career Grand Slam at The Masters is a generational achievement and it gives him a powerful SPOTY narrative. The public have always admired Rory, but with this historic win, it feels like his to lose.

Luke Littler, the teenage darts sensation who won the World Championship at the start of the year, remains second in the betting at 9/2.

His rise has captured the public’s imagination but he may need further major titles to challenge Rory’s historic golfing moment.

Lando Norris, chasing his maiden Formula 1 Grand Prix win, is priced at 9/1, while Ronnie O’Sullivan could come into contention if he secures another World Snooker Championship.

Jack Draper, now considered Britain’s tennis hope following Andy Murray’s decline, is an outsider at 16/1 but could surge with a strong Wimbledon run.
