UK Championship 2021 Review

The 2021 UK Championship could possibly have signalled a changing of the guard in the sport of snooker.

Ding Junhui was the last non-top sixteen seed to win the UK in 2005 but 2021 blew that record out of the water when number twenty-six seed Zhao Xintong lifted the trophy after beating the number forty seed Luca Brecel 10-5 in the Final. This was the first ranking event to be contested by two non-top 16 players.

The UK Championship has been consistently won by the likes of established, older players Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson and Mark Selby for years but 2021 saw the twenty-four year old Zhao take on twenty-six year old Brecel in a final full of aggressive snooker and high breaks.

Zhao Xintong saw off the likes of John Higgins, Jack Lisowski and Barry Hawkins before outgunning Brecel in the Final and the young Chinese player fulfilled the promise he has been showing on the tour since 2014. His performance in York was a considerable step-up in consistency in a thoroughly dominant display of attacking snooker. As a result of his win in York Zhao was cut from odds of 200/1 to just 33/1 to win the World Championship in Sheffield.

UK Championship History

The first UK Snooker Championship took place in 1977 at the Tower Circus in Blackpool and was won by Irishman Patsy Fagan who defeated Doug Monutjoy 12-9 in the Final.

The UK Championship's early history was dominated by Steve Davis who won the event six times in eight years between 1980 and 1987. Davis' arch rival the mercurial Alex Higgins beat Davis 16-15 in an epic final in 1983 but also was on the receiving end of heavy defeats from 'The Nugget' in 1980 and 1984. Davis' last victory in the UK was in 1987 but he made it to the final again eighteen years later in 2005 when losing out to Ding Junhui 10-6.

Stephen Hendry made the final of the UK an amazing ten times in his career, winning five and losing five. Hendry's era spanned nineteen years, ranging from a defeat to Doug Mountjoy in the final in 1988 through to losing to Peter Ebdon at the final hurdle in 2006.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the UK Championship more times than any other player with seven victories in 1993, 1997, 2001, 2007, 2014, 2017 and 2018. O'Sullivan also lost in the final to Mark Selby in 2016 but with seven wins from eight final appearances his rivals will be hoping that O'Sullivan doesn't make it to another final in 2021.

UK Championships Final Scores

What will be the correct score in the UK Championship final?

Most snooker fans will have had the occasional bet on the correct score of a match and the final of an event as big as the UK Championship is likely to attract plenty of punts on what the final score will be.

The final has been played over nineteen frames since 1993 so we have 29 years of finals to compare. The heaviest defeats recorded in that period were the 10-1 victories of Ronnie O'Sullivan over Ken Doherty in 2001 and by Stephen Maguire over David Gray in 2006.

Just under a third of the 29 finals have finished 10-6 so anyone considering a correct score bet on the UK Championship final should definitely have a close look at the odds on that scoreline for the final.

Seven of the last ten finals were won by at least three clear frames but 202's epic Robertson v Trump match became the sixth occasion when the event went down to a final frame decider.
