May Trainers

We roll on towards the summer with Epsom and Royal Ascot on the horizon the big guns will be out in force.  We made a nice profit last May with 5 of our 7 trainers showing a profit, those 5 will be back and we have a couple more to replace the losers.  In total 5 GB flat, 1 Irish flat and 2 GB NH.  We need a strong month to get back on track as it has been a tricky year to date.

GB FLAT TURF

RALPH BECKETT (ALL)

Reliable Ralph, Kimpton blog regular, gave us a +£10.00 LSP last month and comes into May on the back of a winning April.

  • 2017     9/52     17%     +£ 2.41
  • 2018     8/50     16%     +£ 3.43
  • 2019    12/57    21%     +£11.28
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021    13/59    22%      (£11.58)

We must have made some good Early Price gains as our own figures were over 20 points better the the SP.

RICHARD HANNON (2YO'S)

Our best GB trainer last May, a +£18.50 LSP with his 2 and 3 year olds last season usually gets his youngsters firing early but his 3yo figures have tailed off a little so just his 2yo's this time around.

  • 2014     16/46     35%     +£20.77
  • 2015     10/43     23%      (£ 6.37)
  • 2016     13/52     25%     +£ 8.33
  • 2017      8/33      24%      (£ 1.47)
  • 2018      6/37      16%       (£ 5.90)
  • 2019      5/29      17%     +£14.50
  • 2020      Covid
  • 2021      7/36      19%     +£28.10

I've gone way back to 2014 to show how the legacy has carried on from Richard Hannon Snr, when you consider Early Price profits would almost be guaranteed in 2015 and 2017 on 10 and 8 winners it makes them even more impressive.

ROGER VARIAN (ALL)

Newmarket trainer who seems to get stronger year on year, has loads of firepower and usually starts the season well.

  • 2017     14/61     23%     (£ 4.78)
  • 2018     13/72     18%     (£ 6.55)
  • 2019     17/88     19%    +£10.08
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021     19/77     25%    +£32.29

Improving figures year on year and like Hannon with double figure winners in 2017 and 18 its almost certain that we would have turned the SP loss into an EP profit in those years.

Has had two winners at Newmarket this afternoon. (29th April)

KEITH DALGLEISH (3YO+)

Scottish trainer who has appeared in all three sections of the blog in the past, he never seems to do it for us but its hard to ignore his May figures.

  • 2017     11/73      15%    +£ 7.00
  • 2018       4/79       5%     (£52.00)
  • 2019     15/78      19%     +£25.83
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021     13/73      18%    +£30.11

Obviously a repeat of 2018 would be an absolute disater but the stats are improving year on year and a strike rate just under 20% in the type of races his horse will be contesting is really good.  It's also nice to have a northern trainer as the other trainers will be contesting similar races.

EVE JOHNSON HOUGHTON (3YO+)

Oxon trainer who is really under rated in my opinion, she can get one ready and operates with all class of horses.

  • 2017     9/39     23%     +£66.50
  • 2018     5/43     12%      (£16.75)
  • 2019     8/43     19%      +£18.75
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021     5/38     13%      +£26.50

Ideally we would like a slightly better strike rate but she comes into the month in profit for April.  She actually had a 33/1 2yo winner in 2019 but that was only 1 of 3 in the above period so we really need to discount them.

IRISH FLAT

GER LYONS (ALL)

Back from last month where he did ok with his 3yo's but not as good as we would have liked, he was our most profitable trainer last May with +£21.00 LSP.

  • 2017     8/49     16%     (£10.02)
  • 2018    13/61    21%     +£ 5.39
  • 2019    14/59    24%     (£  6.70)
  • 2020    Covid
  • 2021     9/41     22%     +£15.73

We made a profit from his runners in 2019 and obviously again last year so we have to include again.

GB NH

NICKY HENDERSON (ALL)

The season may be over but the Seven Barrows maestro usually starts the new season well.

  • 2016     18/58      31%     +£ 0.58
  • 2017      9/34       26%     (£ 1.99)
  • 2018     19/49      39%    +£12.81
  • 2019     13/43      30%     (£ 5.13)
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021     20/69      29%     (£ 5.01)

This is a good example of what I've been talking about with regards to Early Price gains, we turned a £5.01 SP Loss into a £6.50 profit last season from 20 winners and thats from a trainer that doesn't really gamble his horses.  Fantastic strike rate over a 5 year period.

SEAMUS MULLINS (NON CHASE)

Wiltshire trainer who doesn't appear too aften, gave a +£4.67 LSP last May with his non chasers.

  • 2017     4/26     15%     +£14.33
  • 2018     8/28     28%     +£15.50
  • 2019     5/30     17%     +£ 2.83
  • 2020     Covid
  • 2021     5/21     24%     +£ 2.00

Another one who had a massive price winner in 2019 (Chaser) but overall 3/36 over the same period with his chasers so we can't be seduced by that one winner.

I really hope we can get back on track in what is becoming an increasingly disappointing year.

As always any comments, questions, observations please leave below....Good luck.

8th - Better day, winners for Dalgleish, Hendo and Lyons.     3/15     +£3.14

9th - Nice EP gains today, Dalgliesh had a winner at 11/2 that was bet at 18's in the morning.     2/12     +£9.00

10th - Nothing to report.     0/3     (£3.00)

11th - Horrendous day, it's going to be a long month at this rate.     0/17     (£17.00)

12th - At last a glimmer of light, three seconds, two thirds, a 5/2 winner from Beckett then Mullins landed a 25/1 winner.     2/15     +£14.50

13th - A day that set off with a 45/1 Hannon 2yo winner that returned at 14's then nothing, can't complain though.     1/16     +£30.00

14th - It looked like another frustrating Saturday but we managed some respectability with late winners from Varion and Lyons to go with a coupe of shorties.     4/22     (£6.78)

15th - Hannon had another winner then Lyons with two in Ireland, winning day.     3/7     +£6.27

16th - Another nice day with winners from Dalgiesh, Hendo and EJH.  Beckett had one just beat late on at 7's but backed at 22's.     3/9     +£9.41

17th - We managed to wipe out almost all yesterdays good work.     0/8     (£8.00)

18th - Big EP gains, we had winners bet at 9's 7's 15/2 and 1/3 that returned 7/2 9/2 13/2 and 1/8, that's over 8 points extra taking the early BOG prices.     4/9     +£18.83

19th - Surprisingly quiet day with just two runners after a couple were withdrawn.     0/2     (£2.00)

20th - Just when we'd got our nose in front for the month and we have a disaster of a day.     0/20     (£20.00)

21st - It started well with a nice winner in Ireland but then only a couple of Varian winners at 3's.     3/28     (£11.00)

22nd - Tiny profit on the day, a double for Lyons and a Dalgliesh winner.     3/22     +£1.00

23rd - Four seconds today, we couldn't get anything over the line.     0/10     (£10.00)

24th - Jeez another couple of seconds today, we are going to need a strong end to the month.     0/7

25th - Quiet day but a winner and a level day to stop the rot.     1/3     +£0.00

26th - Just a Varian shorty.     1/7     (£5.70)

27th - A big priced EJH winner saved the day, I made a slight mistake at taking 33's (BOG) when 40's (non BOG) was on offer, can't be too greedy it returned 14's!     1/10     +£24.00

28th - What a rollercoaster day, it set off well with our first runner winning at 7.8 (Exchange) then the day went from bad to worse, 19 runners (lots fancied) and just a 11/10 winner.  At this point I was really disappointed.  Back from work I looked a some prices for the Football and noticed one of my accounts had a lot more than it should in it, "have I had a winner?"   Micheals Choice had obliged at 20's, brilliant, tiny profit on the day, next race at Salibury another winner at 7/2.  I had a runner at 7.30 so I fired the commentary up in the background while finalising mt footy bets, the horse looked to have little hope drifting from 11's to 22's, towards the business end and it was still getting a mention so I turned the stream on to find it in front jumping the last and scooting clear......Wahooooo, good old Nico da Boing Boing! we are in profit for the month now.  The last runner finished second or so I thought, whilst sorting out the runners for Sunday it said Chasamax had won in the stewards room, wow, what a day......all my footy bets lost though lol!!

6/26     +£36.73

29th - Quiet day but a winning one.     1/3     +£0.75

30th - Beckett winner, small loss.     1/7     (£2.50)

31st - Hannon started the day well but just a couple or Varian winners at short prices so a small loss.     3/14     (£2.25)

I'm happy for a winning month but I think we were a little lucky, 7 winners at 16's + hid an awful strike rate and we can't keep relying on massive prices to bail us out.

Monthly Total

50/378     +£10.29

Yearly Total

154/1047     (£130.47)
