Haydock Racecourse Guide

Haydock Park in Merseyside features high-class National Hunt and Flat racing throughout the year.

Type of Racing: Flat & NH

NH Highlights: The Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock is the pinnacle of their National Hunt season, the race takes place in November often on testing ground conditions and has been won by top-quality chasers like Kauto Star, Cue Card, Silviniaco Conti and Bristol De Mai in recent years.

On the same day as the Betfair Chase is the Betfair Stayers Handicap Hurdle, another race which can be very demanding and attracts large fields, but finding the winners can be very rewarding. Early in the year, we have the Peter Marsh Chase, a race that can feature some of the top three milers.

In February, Haydock hosts a Grand National Trial; however, the form of the winner of this has been questionable. During May, Haydock hosts a noteworthy event outside of the regular jumps season - the Swinton Handicap Hurdle. This race typically draws in a good number of competitors and takes place on the same day as the Long Distance Handicap Hurdle.

Flat Highlights: The Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup in September is the most prestigious event. Worth over £150k, the race attracts the top sprinters from around Europe and on the same day, there is the Old Borough Cup, a class two handicap run over one mile and six furlongs.

In July, we get to see the fillies and mares in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks, which has been present since 1939 and has been won by the likes of Alpinista, who went on to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe the following year. That racecard also features the class two handicap, the Old Newton Cup, which more often than not throws up a decent-priced winner.

In terms of heritage handicaps, the Silver Bowl is contested in May and is restricted to three-year-old runners, which can attract decent-sized fields. On the same card are a couple of Group 2 races in the Sandy Lane Stakes and the Temple Stakes.

Overall, Haydock Park has 10 Graded races over jumps and 8 Group races on the flat.

Haydock Draw Bias

✅ When breaking Haydock down into trips, you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the best LSP. That would be stall 4 over a trip of 6f, which has, over the last five years, produced an LSP of +32.18.

❌ Backing stall 5 at Haydock over a trip of 1m is the most unsuccessful stall and trip combination at Haydock, returning an LSP of -87.93 over the last five years.

Here we have the draw bias for Haydock taken into consideration in races with ten or more runners. We will break down the figures by race trips. Draws can be much more important in shorter trips, where runners do not have time to find their position during the race, meaning the draw is probably more important than in races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)

The following table shows a breakdown of a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example, in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12). The positions will always be the lowest stall number to the highest.
