US Open Pool Championship: Format
The US Open Pool Championship is a 9-ball event played in a double-elimination format up until the round of last sixteen where the event reverts to single elimination.
This means the first time you lose you then enter the loser's bracket where all non-winners play off to attempt to qualify for the last sixteen.
The first two rounds are played over a race to nine racks. Round three onwards are played over a race to eleven eleven racks until the final which is a race to thirteen racks.
The event can be watched in the USA on DAZN.
US Open Pool Championship 2022 Result
Two hundred and fifty six players took their places at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City in the second week of October to contest the forty-fifth renewal of the US Open Pool Championship.
Francisco Sanchez Ruiz from Spain took his first US Pool Championship title defeating Austrian Max Lechner 13-10 in the Final.
This was a disappointing tournament for the USA with not one American player making it to the last sixteen.
Champion Sanchez Ruiz had to battle to take the title, surviving three final frame deciders against Jere Virtaranta in winner's round 1, Wu Kun Lin in the last 32 and, most notably, against reigning champion Carlo Biado in the semi-final.
Sanchez also won the Junior World Nine-ball Championship in 2010.
The 2022 event was a high-quality affair with multiple former champions taking part. Among the former champions lining up again this year are:
- Carlo Biado (2021)
- Joshua Filler (2019)
- Jason Shaw (2017)
- Shane Van Boening (2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016)
- Darren Appleton (2010, 2011)
- Mika Immonen (2008, 2009)
- Alex Pagulayan (2005)
- Ralf Souquet (2002)
Unfortnuately one the biggest names in pool, five-time winner Earl Strickland, could not take part in 2022 due to contracting covid 19.
