2024 Saratoga Derby Preview

The Saratoga Derby was first established back in 1904 when Delhi won the inaugural running of the race under the guidance of jockey George M, Odom for a purse of $10,285, however, after just three renewals the race was not held again after 1906. In 2019 the NYRA brought back the race under the name Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes as part of a new 'Turf Trinity' series which included the Belmont Derby and Jockey Club Derby.

The race now carries a purse of $1m and is run over a distance of one and three-sixteenths miles on the turf and it was an Irish raider who won the race in 2021 with Joseph O'Brien's runner State Of Rest winning under the guidance of John R. Velazquez, a runner who went on to win both the W. S. Cox Plate in Australia and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Due to the limited number of renewals, the trends below must be taken with a pinch of salt due to the lack of statistics available, however, below you can find lots of information on the race including past winners as well as trainer and jockey statistics.
