How Does the Met Office Define a White Christmas?

While it was once based purely on snowfall at the Met Office HQ in London, the definition has since widened to include a number of stations across the UK.

According to the Met Office:

“The definition that the Met Office uses to define a White Christmas is for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25th December.”

That means even the smallest flurry could officially land punters a winning bet.

When Was the Last White Christmas in the UK?

The UK has not seen widespread snow cover on Christmas Day since 2010, when large parts of the country woke up to blankets of snow.

Since then, while flurries have been observed, many festive forecasts have ended up cold and wet rather than white.

With 2025 markets now live, bettors are weighing up whether we’re finally due another snowy Christmas morning.

What the expert says...
The odds make a White Christmas favourite this year, and given how long it’s been since the UK enjoyed proper festive snow, it’s no surprise punters are latching onto this market. The 4/5 price suggests there’s a very real chance of flurries on December 25th.
