A return to Lincoln could be off the cards though if Cowley is sought after by Grimsby with the Mariners looking for a new man to take over after Paul Hurst was sacked.

BetVictor's early betting market has three joint favourites at 6/1 including Graham Alexander, who was sacked by MK Dons earlier this month.

Paul Hurst was sacked by Grimsby on Saturday after another defeat

Grimsby's 1-0 defeat to Doncaster on Saturday signalled the end of Paul Hurst's second reign in charge of the club as the Mariners slipped down to 21st in the table.

Hurst was in his second spell at Blundell Park after coming back in 2020 while they were in the National League and he helped them to promotion via the play-offs during his time.

Chairman Jason Stockwood announced that the club had been looking at data and the general performance in the last 6 weeks to come to the decision to dismiss Hurst.
