Rob Elliot is the early favourite to take over at Carlisle United next

Betting odds are now available on who will be the next Carlisle United manager with UK Betting Sites placing Gateshead manager Rob Elliot as the leader in the latest market.

Elliot currently has Gateshead at the top of the National League and that impressive start to the season has seen plenty of eyes on his managerial work.

It's no surprise then to see him as the top contender for the Carlisle job with the latest betting market a tight one with some popular names from the EFL included.

BetVictor have placed Elliot as the 5/1 favourite in the betting market, with Pete Wild and Ryan Lowe following just behind as 6/1 joint second favourites.

What the expert says...
Current Gateshead manager Rob Elliot is the 5/1 favourite to replace the outgoing Paul Simpson as Carlisle manager after he left the club on Saturday. Elliot has Gateshead as the league leaders in the National League and he now may be ready to take the next step in his managerial career by taking over at Carlisle.

Carlisle-born Paul Simpson left the club after their defeat to Tranmere Rovers

Paul Simpson left his role as Carlisle United manager following their 2-1 loss at home to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday which sees them sit in 20th place in the League Two table.

Simpson had previously managed Carlisle before and this had been his second spell in charge and last season saw the side relegated to League Two.

The defeat to Tranmere was United's third from their four league games and those poor results ultimately signalled the end of Simpson's time in charge of the club.

Carlisle 12/1 to be relegated from League Two this season

Despite the tough start to the season seeing Carlisle sit in 20th place in the League Two table, their odds of relegation are still fairly big at 12/1.

Those odds put them as the 12th favourites to go down this season with bookmakers still only thinking there's a 7.7% chance of them going down.

It's clear that whoever comes in will have a tough job on their hands but they will have the obvious backing of the club's American owners the Piatak family.
