Ian Nepomniachtchi was the runner up in last year's World Championship after winning the 2022 Candidates Tournament and he comes back again to try and win once more.
Nepomniachtchi is 7th in the overall world ranking's as of March 2024 and qualifies for this event dude to him being the runner-up in last year's World Championship.
Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen qualified for this year's Candidates Tournament by winning the 2023 FIDE World Cup but has decided not to compete.
Carlsen stated that "I would say the main reason is that I don't enjoy it. It's as simple as that," as his reasoning for declining to play in the event this year.
