First Round Review:
Ante-post favourite, Mongys Wild, lived up to his big reputation when breaking the track record in Heat Three of the first round of the St Leger at Nottingham and cemented his place at the top of the market. Mark Wallis’ dog did not have things his own way though as he was involved in a protracted battle with long-time leader Droopys Flare, eventually prevailing by three-quarters of a length. Connections of the runner-up must be delighted as this was the Sheffield based bitch’s first run since March and they will surely think their charge will have a great chance of overturning this result in next Monday’s semi-final.
The first heat provided the first shock of the evening as 7/1 shot Beatties Electra blasted out of the traps and led all the way, seeing off the late drive of Garfiney Blaze by a neck with the odds-on Droopys Flotilla also qualifying for the semi-finals after a disappointing performance.
If Beatties Electra provided an unexpected result that was nothing compared to the overturning of 1/9 favourite Deadly Disco in the second heat. Richard Rees’ recent Stayers Trophy winner at Hove never looked happy on his first sighting of the Nottingham track and was comfortably repelled by just under three lengths by another all the way leader in Daring Moaner. The winner recently won an Open Race at Doncaster but this was a major step-up in form despite recording the slowest winning time of the four heats.
Heat four looked a match between the recent Summer Stayers winner at Monmore, Vhagar, and the in-form bitch, Fabulous Heka and so it proved with the former the clear leader early on but with Fabulous Heka tracking closely. The complexion of the race changed at the fourth bend where Fabulous Heka swept into the lead and quickly put daylight between herself and the early leader. Vhagar stuck to his guns but couldn’t close the gap and Fabulous Heka ran out an impressive three length winner.
All of the above added up to a great evening of racing from these stayers and the semi-finals should be races to savour.
First Round Preview:
Mark Wallis’ Mongys Wild is the 6/4 favourite to lift the St Leger trophy but that price looks short enough considering he was beaten four lengths by second favourite Fabulous Heka when they met over course and distance two weeks ago. Mongys Wild did suffer a small amount of interference that day but it looks a stretch to say he would have won even with a clear round and considering he was a very long odds-on shot to win that day, he looks a risky proposition at such short ante-post odds.
The aforementioned Fabulous Heka equalled the track record that evening and has since cemented her claims for this event with an eight-length victory over 712m at Towcester. She will be hard to beat and looks a decent bet to take the final heat this evening.
Another Mark Wallis dog (Garfiney Blaze) is favourite for the first heat but it must be a concern that he was pulled out of a match-up against Mongys Wild at Hove at the start of August as he was lame. He’s had a couple of trials since then but the in-form bitch Droopys Flotilla could replace him as favourite come race time.
Heat Two sees a very short-price favourite (around ⅕) in Deadly Disco, trained by Richard Rees at Hove. Deadly Disco comes here off the back of two good wins at his home track but is without a trial at Nottingham so might need this race to acclimatise himself.
Mongys Wild is as short as ¼ to win Heat Three but has a couple of very classy opponents to take care of in the shape of Droopys Flare and Delicate Lass. Droopys Flare has been off since March but recently ran an excellent trial of 44.54 over the course and distance and if she isn’t too ring rusty she could give the favourite a scare. Also involved in this heat is Irish raider Delicate Lass who looks a useful stayer having won three of her last four Open Races over 686m at Limerick. She is another without the benefit of a look at the Nottingham track and she will likely improve for the experience if she can navigate her way through tonight’s heat.

2024 Greyhound St Leger: Preview
The £20,000 St Leger will take place at Perry Barr in September with six first round heats over 710m.
Take note of any dogs from Ireland that are entered. Only three Irish dogs took part in 2023 and one finished second and one other won it's semi-final only to be withdrawn off colour before the Final
Droopys Clue was an outstanding St Leger winner in 2023, breaking the track record in the Final but no dog has ever retained the St Leger so take that into consideration if thinking of backing Droopys Clue to follow-up in 2024.
Bitches have won three of the last four runnings from a very small entry. The winners were : Havana Lover (2022), Space Jet (2021) and Smallmead (2020).
