3:20 Haydock Tips

Some old favourites running here. Triple Trade has been running fairly consistently this season, including two wins. He's on a fair mark and should be competitive back in veterans' company. With five places on offer, he's got to be worth chancing.

Won really impressively two runs back by 13 lengths with today's jockey riding. Got brought down at the first fence at Cheltenham last time out. Has an outstanding each-way chance and is a big price here at 10/1 for five places.

£51K to the winner of this handicap chase. Four runs for the selection this winter. Back to form four weeks ago when beaten just a length in a similar veteran's handicap chase. Well clear of some high-rated rivals. Top yard/jockey. A 10-year-old now but is still a youngster against most of these rivals and was rated 9 lb higher this time last year.

Has the burden of top weight to carry but is a former course and distance winner and chased home Protektorat over further at Kelso when last seen at the end of February. Each way value with 5 places generally available.

James Bowen's excellent record in chases is hard to ignore, and it's no surprise if he can get this one among the five places on offer. He's 1-2-2 on the horse in his last three rides with him.

This seasoned competitor must be viewed as a strong each-way bet at generous 20/1 odds as he returns to faster ground, which favours him compared to his last performance in heavy mud. Having been dropped 2 lb by the handicapper and with Sam Twiston-Davies aboard, he is certainly capable of a resurgence based on his November victory at Newbury.

It was Rian Corcoran’s 7 lb claim that swayed me, though, as this takes Neon Moon to a mark of 123, which is below his last four winning marks. The jockey has been well utilised by Pipe, being 13 from 48 for him. He’s 10 from 34 over fences, and sits on 19 winners, losing 2 of his 7 lbs after 20 winners, so hopefully they’ve been waiting for this one. Indeed, he’s only had one ride since mid-March, and that was a few days ago, so he’d have kept the 7 lbs for this even if that had won. I think it’s an interesting angle, and takes this horse down to a low racing weight of 10 st 8 lbs on suitable ground. The only time he’s faced good ground this year, he won. On balance he looks a big price for one that should stay the trip well and be doing his best work late. In the hole they go a bit too quick for some of these to get home.

Price seems too big. Was only 6/1 when hampered and unseating at the sixth in this race last year. The year before, he had finished 2nd. Highly likely he's been trained with this one in mind. In good form, won at Ayr in February.
