This 5-year-old gelding, trained by R. Varian, has won five times from seven furlongs to one mile on good to firm ground and good ground. The latest was over one mile on good to firm ground at Sandown 27 days ago, when he stayed on well inside the final furlong to beat the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Hard Endeavor by 1/2 length. With Ray Dawson back in the plate, he can follow up today.

Tribal Chief has some strong form in big-field handicaps and could be the one to be with in this ultra-competitive handicap. He started his season with a fine third in the Lincoln, a run made even more meritorious because of the poor draw he had. He was third in the Victoria Cup at Ascot, just meeting trouble at a crucial point of the race. He wasn't far behind the very useful Indalo at Sandown last time and would have been closer if he hadn't missed the break. His trainer, David Menuisier, has a good record in Goodwood handicaps, and it's interesting that he avoided the Hunt Cup, possibly trying to save something for this race.

2 wins from 3, including at Gowran Park in June. Well beaten in the Irish Derby last time, but can go close back at a mile today.

This horse has been placed in his last three races, all quality large field handicaps, off similar marks. Might be a touch too high in the weights to win but looks like a good each-way bet at decent odds.

An each-way finish is certainly within reach, as the savvy Class 2 handicapper quickly regains form, manages large fields adeptly, and excels over this trip with champion jockey Oisin Murphy at the helm.

Ozat is starting to look very nicely handicapped on his French form and putting a line through his poor run at Sandown, his 8th in the Hunt Cup looks strong from a poor draw and now lower in the weights. I've managed to bag a bit of 45/1 so I'm hoping he can run a good race and I think he's got the potential to go close with Billy Loughnane booked.

Hawksbill finished 5th of 20 here just 2 days ago over 7f but he does get a mile and his only win remains a one mile race as a two year old at Haydock but his mark is fair in this competitive one mile handicap.

darkness looks good value here at 40/1.he has dropped to a good mark and has a nice high draw.his last run in this grade he was only beaten a couple of lengths off of 6 pounds higher
