The William Haggas 4yo is unexposed at this trip, but certainly caught the eye in his hat-trick bid in the Copper Horse h'cap (1m 6f) at Royal Ascot, when coming from well off the pace & widest of all to finish 6th , btn 4l. The cheekpieces are back on , used once before when winning at Haydock in his final race of last season.

Won three times for this stable. Made it three from three this season when winning the Northumberland Vase last time. Up in trip and carries 5 lb extra but is still not out of it. My NAP bet.

He performs exceptionally well in long-distance events, recently finishing 2nd by a head in the Ascot Stakes. This untested stayer thrives at the 2m4f distance with the help of effective blinkers, making him a strong each-way bet at reasonable odds.

This looks as competitive a renewal of this marathon handicap as I can recall. Several of them have either strong previous or current form, and I'm going with one who has some excellent performances from earlier seasons. Alphonse Le Grande won the Chester Plate, Northumberland Vase and the Cesarewitch in 2024, three big-field staying handicaps. He was badly out of form in 2025, but hinted at a return to nearer his best in the Northumberland Vase in June. His trainer, Tony Martin, has had a poor time by his standards in the last year. However, he seems to have turned a corner, having had winners at Galway this week. The selection is quite well handicapped on his best form and can put up a good showing here.

French trained 5yo. He made a nice debut for a new yard at Royal Ascot six weeks ago, involved in a photo for 3rd place in a quality 20 runner handicap over this marathon 20f trip, a first run for him on quick ground. He was at the rear and wide on the final turn into the straight but he galloped all the way to line up the 3f staight. Only a lb higher for this handicap.

Simply put he seems a bit of a boat, often getting tapped for toe at a critical point but staying on well to make the frame. 4th in the Melrose last year from which the winner is 12lbs higher, 2nd is 12lbs higher and the 3rd is 12lbs higher after winning at Royal Ascot from a mark 7lbs higher. Sea Of Kings runs from the same mark (83) having again been outpaced on his return over 12f and then was beaten at short odds in first time cheekpices last time. Those are replaced by his usual tongue tie as he steps markedly up in trip for his trainer who has hit a strong patch of form. Ground will be ideal and he can start to fulfil he potential at these extreme staying trips.
