This Grade 1 race was previously run at Hollywood Park under the name Hollywood Gold Cup before moving to Santa Anita and becoming the Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, in 2020 the name was reverted back to the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes.
The race is run on the dirt over a distance of one and a quarter miles (10 furlongs) and is open to runners who are aged three or older. The inaugural running of the race in 1938 was won by Seabiscuit.
