McIlroy Leads SPOTY Market After Historic Augusta Triumph

The latest betting odds for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2026 have seen a major shift, with Rory McIlroy now the clear 5/2 favourite following his historic Masters victory.

With UK betting sites reacting quickly to major sporting achievements, McIlroy’s back-to-back wins at Augusta have propelled him to the top of the market.

The Northern Irishman became just the fourth player in history to win consecutive Masters titles, joining golfing icons Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo in an elite group.

Speaking after his victory, McIlroy said: “I can't believe I waited 17 times to get one Green Jacket and now I get two in a row,” a moment that has clearly resonated with both fans and bookmakers alike.

William Hill have now placed McIlroy as the clear favourite in the latest market to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year.

Masters Success Puts McIlroy in Command

McIlroy’s achievement at Augusta cannot be overstated, with consecutive Masters victories placing him firmly in the spotlight for this year’s SPOTY award.

That would see him crowned consecutive SPOTY too after he was voted winner at the 2025 ceremony back in December.

If he can add further titles or maintain his form, his position at the top of the market is likely to strengthen even further.

What the expert says...
SPOTY markets are driven by big moments and narratives, and McIlroy has delivered one of the biggest stories of the year already. It’s now his award to lose if he maintains momentum.

Russell Leads the Chasing Pack

Mercedes driver George Russell sits second in the betting at 11/2, with the Englishman firmly in contention for the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship this season.

F1 drivers have a strong track record in SPOTY, particularly when involved in title battles, and Russell’s chances could improve significantly if he secures the championship.

Elsewhere, skeleton star Matt Weston (13/2) represents a winter sports angle that often performs well with voters, while footballers Harry Kane (8/1) and Declan Rice (16/1) remain in contention depending on club and international success.

Keely Hodgkinson (12/1) and Luke Littler (14/1) add further variety to the market, with both capable of generating strong public support with standout performances.
