I break betting odds news as it happens, so you’re never left behind when the market moves or a top offer lands.

  • Wigan Athletic have sacked Ryan Lowe after just 11 months in charge.
  • Gary Caldwell is the early favourite in the next manager betting market.
  • The Latics sit inside the League One relegation zone after a dramatic slump in form.

Wigan Sack Lowe as Manager Betting Market Opens

UK betting sites have moved quickly to price up the Next Wigan Athletic Manager market after the club confirmed the sacking of Ryan Lowe following Saturday’s humiliating 6–1 defeat to Peterborough United.

The result proved to be the final straw for the Latics hierarchy with the loss dropping Wigan into the League One relegation zone.

Lowe departs after just 11 months in charge, having overseen a dramatic collapse in form since early December.

In a club statement, Wigan confirmed that Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow will take charge on an interim basis while the board “work quickly to identify and appoint” a new head coach.

BetVictor's latest market now places former player and manager Gary Caldwell as the early favourite to take over.

Sharp Decline Leaves Wigan in Trouble

Wigan’s decision to act was driven by a worrying run of results.

After beating Burton Albion on 2 December, the Latics were sitting 11th in the table and looked comfortably mid-table.

Fast forward to now and the picture is bleak. Wigan have:

  • Won just once in their last 10 league matches
  • Slipped to 22nd place after 29 games
  • Fallen two points from safety

After opening the season with a win against Northampton, form tailed off badly, with just three victories from 17 matches between late August and late November.

Next Permanent Wigan Manager Betting Odds

With Lowe gone, attention has turned immediately to who could be trusted with steering Wigan away from relegation danger.

Below are the latest odds, via BetVictor, with implied probabilities calculated from the fractional prices.

Glenn Whelan6/114.3%
Gary Rowett8/111.1%
Darren Moore10/19.1%
Darren Ferguson10/19.1%

Caldwell Installed as Early Favourite

Former Wigan captain Gary Caldwell heads the betting at 4/1, giving him an implied probability of 20% to land the job.

Caldwell’s strong connection to the club is a major factor behind his position at the top of the market but his position at Exeter may find any movement a struggle.

Having previously managed Wigan during a turbulent period, he knows the environment, the fanbase and the pressures of League One survival.

From a betting perspective, clubs in crisis often lean towards familiarity particularly when immediate results are required.

Experienced Names in the Chasing Pack

Gary Rowett (8/1) and Darren Moore (10/1) bring Championship-level experience and reputations as steady operators.

Either would represent a more conservative appointment focused on defensive solidity and organisation.

Meanwhile, Darren Ferguson, also priced at 10/1, has League One pedigree.

Where To Bet on Manager Markets

The Next Wigan Manager market is available on several UK betting sites, with BetVictor among those pricing the outright.

Punters comparing betting sites should look out for:

  • Clear rules on caretaker spells
  • Dead-heat terms if multiple appointments occur
  • Use of free bets on manager markets

Ryan Lowe’s departure ends a difficult chapter for Wigan Athletic, but it also opens the door to a potential reset.
