  • Rob Edwards leaves Middlesbrough for Premier League side Wolves.
  • Gary O'Neil and Steven Gerrard are joint-favourites to replace him.
  • Middlesbrough currently sit 2nd in the Championship table.

Rob Edwards Leaves Boro for Wolves Role

Middlesbrough are officially in the market for a new manager after Rob Edwards departed the club to take over at Premier League strugglers Wolves.

The 42-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Molineux and leaves Boro in a strong position, sitting second in the Championship table.

"This has been one of the toughest decisions of my career," said Edwards. "Wolves is a special club for me. It's where I grew as both a player and coach, and these opportunities don’t come around often."

Boro will reportedly receive between £3m and £4m in compensation and the vacant role at the Riverside now becomes one of the most appealing jobs in the EFL.

UK Betting Sites now have two managers at the top of the market sharing favouritism.

What the expert says...
With Boro chasing promotion and boasting a strong squad, it’s no surprise to see big names linked right away. Steven Gerrard would be a massive name to step into the role, but there are managers with more experience who sit in and around the top of the market.

Who Are the Contenders?

Former Middlesbrough player Gary O'Neil has been without a job since he was sacked by Wolves back in December 2024.

His experience in both Premier League and Championship football makes him a logical candidate.

Out of work following his stint in Saudi Arabia, Steven Gerrard is looking for the right opportunity in English football.

The Boro job could be an ideal fit in the same division where Frank Lampard is flying as Coventry manager.

Former Celtic and Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is an ambitious option.

Whether he would take a Championship role is unclear, but his name remains in the frame.
