  • Guli Francis-Dehqani leads the betting at 6/4 to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
  • Martyn Snow (3/1) and Rachel Treweek (4/1) are seen as strong alternatives.
  • The official announcement is expected this autumn, almost a year after Justin Welby’s resignation.

Francis-Dehqani Continues to Lead Market

The race to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury is heating up, with reports confirming that the Canterbury Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) has drawn up a shortlist of candidates.

While the list remains confidential, CNC chairman Lord Evans of Weardale revealed to Church Times that they are “on track” to announce Justin Welby’s successor in the autumn.

Welby retired in November 2024, meaning the Church of England has been without an Archbishop for almost ten months.

Bookmakers, though, are giving punters a clear idea of who may step into the role.

Ladbrokes latest odds give a 40% chance that it will be Guli Francis-Dehqani who becomes Archbishop of Canterbury next.

Guli Francis-Dehqani, the Bishop of Chelmsford, heads the betting at 6/4.

Known for her progressive views and outspoken support of inclusivity within the church, she is widely seen as a strong contender to be the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury.

Francis-Dehqani was instantly made favourite last year when Justin Welby originally resigned from the role.

Martyn Snow & Rachel Treweek in Contention

Martyn Snow, Bishop of Leicester, sits at 3/1.

Snow has frequently been mentioned in church circles as a figure capable of balancing tradition with reform, something many believe the Church of England will prioritise in its next leader.

Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester, follows at 4/1. Treweek's candidacy would mark another major step towards greater representation at the very top of the church hierarchy.

Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover and former Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons, is priced at 5/1.

She is a popular figure known for her strong oratory and passionate commitment to social justice.

What the expert says...
Bookmakers clearly see Guli Francis-Dehqani as the standout candidate, but with the CNC keeping its shortlist under wraps, punters should tread carefully. The Church has often produced left-field appointments and both Martyn Snow and Rachel Treweek remain very credible options.
