1.5 Million Brits Using Offshore Casinos With No Consumer Protection

The trade-off rarely makes sense for recreational players, particularly given 95% of affordability checks complete without any player contact whatsoever.

All online casinos shout about offers, but how do you know if you can trust them? I review them with insider knowledge so you know where to play, finding to get the best value and how to get

  • An estimated 1.5 million UK adults already use casinos outside UKGC jurisdiction.
  • Since affordability checks became mandatory that number has grown as players seek to sidestep the new requirements entirely.
  • Going offshore means losing UKGC consumer protections, access to UK dispute resolution services, and GamStop self-exclusion coverage.

One and a half million Brits are now gambling on offshore casino sites beyond the reach of UK regulators - and the number is climbing.

Industry researchers Frontier Economics, commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council, link the rise directly to the rollout of affordability checks on licensed sites.

Offshore casinos play by different rules, or none at all. Often, players will encounter no checks, thresholds or calls from the casino.

But what players gain in privacy, they give up in protection. Most only realise how much when something goes wrong.

Here is exactly what is at stake.

Every UK-licensed casino is legally required to honour withdrawals, deal with complaints and offer self-exclusion tools. Offshore operators answer only to whatever jurisdiction issued their licence. In some cases, that means almost nothing.

The UKGC has stepped up its pursuit of unlicensed operators targeting UK players. It is also working with UK banks to block payments to illegal sites.

OLBG's David Coleman says the drift offshore is one of the most damaging things to come out of the affordability check rollout.

"I understand the frustration. But going offshore over a background check that 95% of people never even notice is a significant gamble in itself.

"You're trading away real, meaningful protections for the sake of avoiding something that probably wasn't going to affect you anyway.

And when something goes wrong at an offshore casino, and eventually it does, there's very little anyone can do to help you."

To put players' minds at ease, I've created a new guide that rates UK-licensed casinos on how smoothly they handle affordability checks for their players.
