  • The UKGC's own pilot data shows 95% of affordability checks complete silently in the background.
  • The vast majority of players experience no disruption, no contact, and no document requests of any kind.
  • Much of the anxiety around checks stems from confusion between what operators are required to do and what some have chosen to do.

Some 95% of affordability checks at casino sites are completed in the background without any player contact, it has emerged.

A 12-month trial period by the UKGC reveals for the vast majority of people there are no document requests, account restrictions, or interruption to the session.

The check uses publicly available data from credit reference agencies such as Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

It looks for indicators of serious financial difficulty such as County Court Judgements or bankruptcy notices.

No Need To Worry

It's time we took a real look at affordability checks and realised that you'll likely never even know they took place. For nearly all players, they are nothing to worry about.

If nothing concerning shows up, and for the vast majority of players nothing does, the session continues as normal.

The table below breaks down exactly what happens at each stage of the two-tier check process.

The checks also have no impact on a player's credit score, a misconception that continues to circulate widely online.

These are not credit applications. Nothing is added to a credit file. No mortgage application is put at risk.

Some casinos have been requesting documents beyond what the regulator mandates, fuelling unnecessary confusion among players.

This means the UKGC's own pilot data tells a very different story to the one dominating headlines right now.

OLBG Casino Expert David Coleman says the gap between perception and reality has become a serious problem for the industry.

He said: “The data is clear. Ninety-five per cent of players sail through without knowing anything has happened.

"But the 5% of cases that do generate friction have dominated the conversation, and some operators have made it worse by asking for things they simply don’t need.

"The result is widespread anxiety about something that, for most people, is a complete non-event. That’s a failure of communication, not regulation.”
