Murphys Law

The Murphy's law adage says Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"

When we bet on sports we know only too well this saying.

A player is sent off, a horse falls at the last fence, rain stops play, a flag is thrown.

Tennis Retirement Rules

So there I was a couple of days ago, watching Jack Sock take apart Florien Mayer in the first round of the US Open tennis.

I had a smile on my face, and a juicy '9/2 Jack Sock' betting voucher neatly folded away in my wallet.

My first bet at Flushing Meadows and it was going to be a beauty.

Sock duly progressed to the second round but I was left cursing and the smile well and truly wiped off my face. Why?

Mayer decided after losing the first two sets and being broken in the third that has 'feeling dizzy' and promptly retired.

You see, my bet was with a bookie who doesn't pay out in tennis matches unless the match is completed.

Mayer would have felt more than a little dizzy if I'd been sitting in the front two rows at Flushing Meadows, I can tell you!

Fast forward to last night and I have a bet on Agnes Szavay defeating Hungarian compatriot Greta Arn.

Arn is in her thirties and surely past her best, whereas Szavay is younger and getting back into form after a year-long injury/recovery.

It doesn't start well, and Szavay loses the first set.

She goes down a break in the third, but then she retires.

Oh well... fair's fair, thinks I.

I check my bookie's rules for this bet... and they settle on the result if the first set is completed!

Murphy, I swear if I ever get my hands on you!!
