Every Football Video Game of the Last Decade Ranked by Sales, Critic Scores and User Reviews

It's all change within the world of football and video games. Change that sees the infamous FIFA series go under a rebrand and change that also sees it's former rival PES consigned to digital relegation.

After nearly 30 years, the makers of the FIFA series, Electronic Arts decided that it was time for a change - at the same time, FIFA wanted more money for their license and the change was largely enforced for financial reasons.

Not only that, but with FIFA pulling clear in terms of quality and sales since the start of the decade, Konami who were the makers of the legendary PES series decided that they could not keep up in the race for supremacy - a race that was finally won by the Electronic Arts squad.

However, FIFA is no more but in its place is the not quite as catchy EA FC series instead. One that after it's debut at the backend of 2023 with EA FC 24 is now currently within its second iteration, the unsurprisingly named EA FC 25.

But are these new games as good as their FIFA forefathers?

With all that in mind, here at OLBG, we decided to rank every version of the FIFA, Football Manager and PES franchises released in the last decade, along with the extremely popular Rocket League, to see which game came out on top. This was based on critic scores (from Opencritic and Metacritic), user ratings from Amazon and the number of copies sold during the year of the game's release.

Here’s how the iconic franchises stacked up against each other…

EA FC 25 still within first year of sales

With a reported 31,000,000 sales worldwide and a 4.6 user rating (the joint highest on the list) from over 18,000 reviews, FIFA 21 ranked as the best Football video game released in the last ten years. The astronomical sales figures alone have made it the best-selling iteration of the extremely successful franchise by some 11 million.

While that is extremely impressive, it's worth noting that at the time of the game's release back in September 2020, lockdowns were being imposed around the world, which definitely impacted how many people purchased it.

FIFA 19 ranked second and had the second highest sales of any game on the list with approximately 20 million. It also beat the 21 version in terms of critic scores, scoring 82% on average. In fact, nine of the top ten places were occupied by FIFA franchise instalments, with the only outlier being the ever-popular Rocket League.

Developed by Epic Games and Psyonix, the game has become free to play since 2020, but back when it was first released in 2015, it sold around 10,000,000 copies which is on par with several of the FIFA instalments.

A level that can be found with the first of the EA FC offerings and although there was going to be an expected decrease in terms of sales, the rebranding meant a decrease of 5,000,000 sales from FIFA 23 to EA FC 24.

With that being said, the increased familiarity with the EA FC series has meant that the current title EA FC 25 has seen 12,000,000 sales to date with the figure still having the potential to increase before EA FC 26 lands on the shelves.

A Lack Of Management

If the progression from FIFA to EA FC was a rather smooth one, the progression from one Football Manager title to another has been at this stage impossible and although by its own standards, FM24 was a worldwide success, its makers Sports Interactive also decided it was time for a change.

Change that this time came with changing the game engine that underpins it all. A change that has currently proved too big to undertake and after FM25 was first announced as delayed until later than it's November 2024 release date, by March 2025 it was announced that the whole release of the game had been scrapped. Will this mean even more sales for FM26 or have Sports Interactive bitten off the hand that feeds them?

With no FM25 release and PES no longer a staple of Konami's digital portfolio, it means that EA FC have had a clear run at the title and with them now having a monopoply on football video games for the next few months, the opportunity to increase the stranglehold on the market will only increase further.
