The trainer and jockey combined to win the first 2-year-old race of the meeting when Zavateri won on Tuesday. This 2-year-old is a former course winner over 5 furlongs and won the Windsor Castle over that same trip at Royal Ascot. Raced over this trip once before when runner-up at Epsom on his second start and is worth another look at this trip.

Maximized underperformed last time at Newmarket, but the leaders went off too fast, and the first two came from off the pace. Previously at Epsom, Maximized came out on top against Havana Hurricane, who dwelt at the start, then made rapid progress in the straight. But William Buick kicked on Maximized as Havana Hurricane approached and won decisively. The contours at Goodwood are similar to Epsom, and Maximized may counter any late move from the rear from Havana Hurricane again.

Two starts for the 2yo colt. He won a useful 15 runner maiden race on his debut - 6 subsequent winners have come out of that race. He then ran a big race at Royal Ascot when 3rd of 20, looking like he was clearly on the wrong side of the track. More to come from this one, he’ll be fresh after a six week break and has every chance in this Group 2.

Is a work in progress and yet to win but caught the eye last time going well in the Group 2 Railway Stakes bumping into the Queen Mary winner and stablemate True Love. Was a similar distance in front of Power Blue as Coppull was in the Coventry at Royal Ascot so seems to have as much chance as that one yet is double the price. Should be winning soon and looks the EW play at currrnt odds. Well entered up and though will get further in time can run well here especially as should hit the line hard. Confidence will grow during race if there is a strong pace.

Has every chance to get in the placings here. Ran on strongly last time out when winning. Big step up, but should give it a good go.

He is on the upside at the minute with a win at Hamilton in a field of 6 and a good third in a larger field of 23 last time. But it should be suited by the extra furlong, and I bid him for a big run.

A muddling affair, but I couldn’t help but have Super Soldier on the overpriced side here. He’s priced on his Ascot fold, when well beaten by Coppull who reopposes. However, he’s come out since and ran a cracker in France, suggesting any rain can play into his favor. He can go forward from stall 1 and set the fractions, and whilst that’s up to chance, it should be between him and Underwriter. At the very least, I’d hope he ends up front rank. Azizam scares me having had my money on in the Windsor Castle, but he looks held by this horse along form lines with Dickensian, who has done something for the form this week overall.

Back up in grade for Archie Watson but there is a lot to like about Underwriter. Two Ayr wins since debuting in May and I am backing a bold effort from the two year old in this Richmond Stakes.

Johnny Murtagh knows a thing or two about high-class races, and this is the real unknown in the race. I suspect Murtagh wouldn't be lining up the horse if he didn't think he was a bit special. Whilst he clearly needs to progress, he looks just the type that could surprise. He easily beat a well-regarded horse from the O'Brien stable last time out and is bred to be very useful. Worth a small bet at this price, I would suggest.
