Combining NFL favourites in accumulators (parlays) may be a profitable way to go, however, a question that is regularly asked is How often do NFL favourites win? so here are some statistics to help you find the answer to that question.

From the beginning of the 2015-16 season up until the end of the 2023-24 season, the win percentage of favourites ranged from as little as 61% to as high as 70%, and the 2017-18 season is the highest win percentage of 70% and last two seasons (2022-23 & 2023-24) have had the lowest win percentage of just 61%.

Top Five Performing Favourites

For games between the 2015-16 and 2023-24 seasons, these are the top five performing teams when they are favourites to win:

• Kansas City Chiefs (100-134 75%)
• New England Patriots (87-121 72%)
• Miami Dolphins (35-49 71%)
• Los Angeles Rams (60-86 70%)
• Minnesota Vikings (61-88 69%)

Four teams fall under the 50% win rate mark when favourites, St Louis Rams only have a 33% win rate (2-6), San Diego Chargers with 42% (5-12), Jacksonville Jaguars have a 48% win rate (24-50) and the Las Vegas Raiders with 48% (12-25) so have not been the most reliable teams to wager on when favourites.

Is it better to bet on the underdog? In terms of 'Giant Killers', there are only two teams who have played over twenty-five games as the underdogs between the seasons that we are looking at and have gone on to win over 50% of those games as the dogs. Those are the Pittsburgh Steelers who have won 34 from 64 games, a win rate of 53% and the Kansas City Chiefs who have won 16 from 27 as underdogs, a win rate of 59%, those are very good figures against the favourites so it is worth watching out for them being picked by our expert NFL tipsters when they are the underdogs.

First of all, Do most NFL games go over or under? Based on the last ten seasons of the NFL, Under has been more successful than over with 51.32% going under whilst only 47.56% went over with the remainder being pushes.

Please remember that whilst it is all well and good looking at the statistics other factors including the weather can play a big part in the result, the best NFL tipsters will always check the weather before placing a wager.

Over the last ten seasons, the line has been set from as low as 28.5 when the Jets went to New England in 2024 to as high as 62.5 when the Chiefs went to the Rams in a game that ended 54-51!

Statistics by Season

You can see that over the last ten seasons, seven of those favoured the under with the 2022-23 season being the highest season for under with the last three now favouring the under and betting £10 on under in each game during the 2022-23 season would have returned a profit of £163.69.

There is generally not a great deal between the percentages which would indicate the bookies are setting the lines well because a 50/50 split would say they are doing their job well.

When you consider the number of variables, from players missing from being on the injury list to different matchups and different game conditions just how consistent the point totals have been over the season.

Over the last ten seasons, the average number of points in a game has ranged from only 43.44 to 49.59 and if you ignore the 2020-21 then that range would be 43.44 to 45.09 which is no difference at all!

The 2020-21 season did fall out of line with the others, the numbers were up with an average of 49.59 points per game, however, it was not your ordinary season with pre-season cancelled, the international games cancelled, players allowed to opt out of playing without punishment which sixty-six players took up and either no fans in the stadium or a largely reduced number of fans.

The reduction of fans seemed to help the visiting teams, their average number of points was up to 24.76 for that season, and the highest in the previous six seasons was 22.88 so it was well above that average.

The Steelers and the Broncos are the two teams that have the best records when it comes to low-scoring games and those that finish with under-the-set points total.

The Steelers have seen 58.90% of their games go under with a profit of £230.80 to £10 bets whilst the Broncos also have a decent profit of £176.23 to £10 bets with 57.06% of their games going under.

When focusing on games played at home then games involving the Chiefs have by far been the best for under with a 62.20% success rate and a profit of £179.50 to £10 n.

On the road, there are four teams worth noting, the Steelers (67.90% £255.09), the Bengals (60.49% £151.02), the Bills (58.75% £122.22) and the Broncos (58.02% £104.45) all have good numbers.

The worst-performing teams for under then we have the 49ers and Eagles who all have identical records of 46.01% of the games seeing under.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers are the two teams who share the top spot overall with strike rates of 52.15% of their games going over, the profits are not big though with the Eagles +£35.40 and the Packers +£20.16.

Only ten of the thirty-two teams have seen more games finish with overs than under, of those the Detroit Lions are worth noting when at home with 60.49% of their games finishing over and showing a profit of £131.54 to £10 wagers.

On the road, games involving the Indianapolis Colts having seen 58.02% finish over the set line and £10 wagers would have resulted in a profit of £92.67.

At the other end of the scale, the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road are not ones to play over on with their games resulting in only 39.88% going over, both the Bengals (37%) and Bills (39%) also have low success rates on the road whilst the Chiefs (35%) don't have many go over at home.

Below is a table that details every team over the last nine seasons, the average number of points they have scored, the average number of points they have given up, and the average number of points in each game they have featured in.

The table is ordered by the highest average number of points in a game down to the least average number of points in a game and also contains the percentage of games that went under and that went over.

As it says on the tin, Monday Night Football is a national live TV game from the NFL which is played on a Monday Night!

Since the 1970 season, this has been a regular fixture in the NFL, between 1970 & 2005 those games were screened live on ABC, however, since September 2006 they have been switched to ESPN.

We will be looking back at the outcome of the games since the start of the 2014 season to see which teams perform well under the extra scrutiny of the live cameras and which do not as well as other factors.

Since the start of the 2014-15 NFL season, every single franchise has appeared in a Monday Night Football game at least five times except the Jacksonville Jaguars who have not been seen on MNF since 2011 and only appeared twice, some have appeared in as many as fifteen.

Not a single team has a 100% record, but we head to Pittsburgh for the team that comes the closest and the Steelers who love an MNF game, since the start of the 2014-15 season their record is 13-1 with their only defeat coming to the Bengals back in 2020 (17-27).

Top Five MNF Franchises since 2014+

• .750 (9-3) Green Bay Packers
• .727 (8-3) Dallas Cowboys
• .727 (8-3) Kansas City Chiefs
• .714 (10-4) Seattle Seahawks

Had you backed those five teams alone on the Moneyline since the start of the 2014 season with £10 stakes, you would have been showing a profit of +£208.89 from a total bet of £620, which is an impressive 33.69% R.O.I.

The Steelers (6-0), Falcons (2-0), and the Texans (1-0) all have perfect records when hosting, staking £10 on each of those would have produced an R.O.I of 67.74% (£90 investment for a £150.97 return).

Worst Performing MNF Teams?

There are a couple of teams worth mentioning here who do not tend to do great, the Giants have a record of 4-14 meaning they have won just 22.22% of their games whilst the Colts are 2-8 with just a 20% win rate.

In each game the bookies will set a totals line, this will be a number where you are bet on whether the points in the game will be under or go over that line.

Backing Under Total Points

In terms of failing to get to that line, it's the Los Angeles Chargers who top the list, when hosting they have gone under in all six of their games, and when the visiting team the games have gone under in three of their five games.

That means from eleven MNF appearances since 2014, games involving the Chargers have gone under 81.82% of the time, this is no surprise to the sportsbooks as wagering on the under with £10 stakes would have resulted in a £62.49 profit.

The only other three teams to return a profit of £40+ are the Vikings (£61.11) with their 10-3 record for under, the Seahawks with £52.18 (10-4), and the Broncos (£51.27) who are 9-3.

Backing Over Total Points

At the other end of things, it's games that involved the Tennessee Titans that produce the points, seven of their eight MNF games have gone over the total set and as a result, their games would have returned a profit of +£53.86 to £10 bets on overs.

Next on the list for profits are games involving the Ravens (+£45.49 to £10 stakes) and the Colts (+£33.79 to £10 stakes) and as you would expect games involving the Chargers (2-9) are the worst to wager on the overs.

Here's a month-by-month look at the NFL year, listing the key events and highlighting when to expect NFL future picks for the new NFL season ahead and NFL match predictions during the active months of the regular season and post-season playoffs and right through to the Super Bowl.

January

• Regular Season Concludes: The 32 NFL teams across the 8 divisions in the AFC and NFC complete their final regular season fixtures in early January. Fourteen teams, the four divisional winners and three wild card qualifiers from each conference make it through to the end-of-season playoffs. The six wild card teams will be those who finished with the best win/loss records despite not winning their division. The seven AFC teams and NFC teams are seeded 1 to 8 respectively in their conference, the seeding is determined by number 1 being the divisional winner with the best win/loss/tie record, numbers 2, 3 & 4 being the remaining divisional winners and numbers 5, 6 & 7 being the wild card qualifiers with the seeding being decided by best win/loss/tie record and head to head results (if needed).
• Wild Card Weekend: The Wild Card weekend closely follows the regular season end with three of the AFC Divisional winners taking on the three AFC teams receiving a wild card place and three of the NFC Divisional winners taking on the three NFC teams receiving a wild card. The AFC team and NFC team finishing with the best win/loss record and winning their respective division receive an automatic bye into the Divisional Play-Off round. The three wild card pairings for both the AFC & NFC are shown in the table below, the home team in each pairing is the best-seeded.

• Divisional Play-Off Round: The six successful teams from the Wild Card Weekend make it through to the Divisional Play-Offs Round and they are joined by the number 1 seeds from the AFC & NFC who received a Wild Card Weekend bye for finishing the regular season with the best win/loss/tie record. The pairings for the Divisional Play-Offs are shown in the table below, the lowest remaining seed plays @ the best seed and so on:

• Conference Championship Weekend: One step away from the Super Bowl for the AFC & NFC Divisional Play-Off Round winners who now meet to decide the NFC Championship and AFC Championship, winners. February

• Pro Bowl Game: Usually takes place the weekend before the Super Bowl and is an All-Star Pro Bowl game featuring an AFC team against a team representing the NFC. Participating players are invited to play via nominations by fellow NFL colleagues, players, coaches and NFL fans voting on the NFL website. Players selected to appear in the All-Star Pro Bowl game who subsequently feature in the following weekend's Super Bowl do not participate in the Pro Bowl game in case of injury. A coach is selected from each conference to manage their respective conference All-Star team.
• Super Bowl: The most prestigious NFL game in the USA is the pinnacle of the NFL season with the AFC champions meeting the NFC champions to see who will lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy and be crowned Super Bowl winners.

March

• NFL Player Trading: The dust has settled after the Super Bowl which draws the NFL season to a close and March signals the annual 'clear out' and NFL team roster changes with the Player trading period commencing. Some players will become 'Free Agents' if contracts are not renewed and 'trades' are also agreed upon between teams who may give up 'NFL Draft' round selections which can be for several upcoming seasons to secure a prime target. For example, ahead of the 2022 NFL season, four experienced Quarterbacks (Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson) were traded in exchange for NFL Draft Round Selections over the next few seasons. 'Player Trades' also take place by way of a straight exchange without any Draft Selections as part of the deal.

April

• NFL Draft: The eagerly awaited annual Draft Selection process is an exciting time for NFL fans to see if their team can secure a potential future NFL Hall of Fame player who may revive the team's fortunes. The NFL Draft is the primary opportunity for NFL teams to recruit new players to their roster, players on the draft must have finished high school at least three years ago and the majority will have played College Football although this is not a prerequisite. Players can also be selected from the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Arena Football League (AFL), leagues which are covered in the NFL picks on OLBG. The event takes place over three days with a round taking place every day, the order of picks is determined in descending order by how well the 32 teams performed the previous season. The team with the worst record will have the 1st pick (considered to be the best choice) and the team winning the Super Bowl will have the final pick (32nd) of the round. May

• New Season Schedule Released: The fixture schedule for the upcoming NFL regular season is released, and some notable dates will be announced in advance of the full 18-week regular season schedule. These include the NFL International Series which will see games taking place across the pond in London (NFL London Series) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley in October, plus a new country was added to the roster for 2022 with a game taking place in Germany in November.

July

• Preseason Training Camp: Teams tend to begin their preseason training around late July.

August

• Pro Football Hall of Fame Game: Preseason practice matches usually commence in early August along with the Pro Football Hall of Fame game which is an annual NFL exhibition game in Ohio. The match coincides with the NFL Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. The participating teams are announced around Super Bowl week (February) along with the newest names to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

September

• New Regular Season Commences: Early September sees the start of the new NFL regular season games with the reigning Super Bowl winners kicking off the new season. For a full list of the NFL season schedule head over to the NFL website schedules section.

October

• NFL International Series: Six NFL teams travel across the pond in October with three scheduled NFL regular season games taking place in London at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley. The NFL London Games grow in popularity year on year with high demand for match tickets resulting in fast sellouts at the Box Office.

November

• NFL International Series: For the first time in November 2022, European NFL fans had the opportunity to watch a regular season NFL game in Munich, Germany. 
• Thanksgiving Day: A regular slot in the NFL regular season schedule now sees three NFL games screened live on Thanksgiving Day.
