Kings features many recognisable Egyptian symbols, such as the God Anubis and a scarab beetle. Ancient Egypt has fascinated people for centuries, and it's easy to see why. It’s the inspiration behind plenty of notable plays, books, art, and films. Therefore, such a captivating tale leads well into the plot of this new slot game.

The premise of the game is that an adventurer, Amy Dawn, is on a quest through a treacherous temple of ancient Kings. In addition to the Book Mechanic feature mentioned in the summary, there are also not one but four Book of Dawn bonuses to play.

Graphics, Music, and Sound Effects

The game takes place in an ancient temple in historical Egypt, and the base game is as dark as you'd imagine an undiscovered temple to be. The graphics are the stellar quality we've come to expect from Hackasw Gaming.

'Mesmerising' is the adjective I'd use to describe the music. It is the style of Egyptian music that is usually used in films that are set in this beautiful region. Expect to hear plenty of Egyptian flutes and drums. Sound effects include the flipping of pages of an ancient text, the clunk of the reels landing and noises from the brave adventurer Amy.

Theme - Ancient Egypt

Amy's adventure takes place in the depths of an ancient temple, so the base game is played in a gloomy, cavernous room. The only light you can see comes from the flames of Amy's torch. However, you can see the outline of an abundance of coins so she is well on her way to an exciting discovery. When the 4 bonus rounds are activated, you're transported to an altogether brighter part of the temple. Here the ancient King's treasures have been discovered so the screen is bathed in dazzling gold.

The grid has been designed to be part of the temple, and it looks like a grand affair with plenty of golden hues. You’ll probably recognise the 'ankh' which is the cross with the loop at the top which is a famous Egyptian symbol. The reels have been carved into ancient stone to complete the antiquated look. The higher value symbols include a green scarab, an Egyptian Goddess, an Egyptian God and Amy. These are then followed by the usual lower paying symbols.

Play Experience & First Impressions

When reading the info on the bonus games there was quite a bit of word repetition. I’m looking at you 'dawn' and 'book!' But in actual fact, the games were straightforward to follow. The higher-level bonus games repeated the mechanisms of the lower-level games but with added extras to give opportunities to win. And the scoreboard next to the grid was helpful. These rounds were entertaining and could certainly bring potential wins

As well as the bonus games, there is also the Book Mechanic feature which takes place in the base game.  Here, a random symbol is chosen to be the Special symbol. And then, 3-5 instances of the Special symbol  land during the spin. The Special symbols then spread to cover the reels that they landed on. This was a cool feature and visually looked impressive on the reels.  

With her hat, bag and camouflage outfit the lead character Amy brought back memories of playing Tomb Raider in the noughties. The story worked well for a slot game and as we know, ancient Egypt is a successful genre in the slots world. There are tonnes of Egyptian-themed slot games out there to enjoy. But this version is certainly at the higher end of the scale.

It has more of a traditional style than Hacksaw’s recent games, but it's entertaining all the same. Hacksaw’s recent games have had a more modern design and include Fist of Destruction and Beam Boys. However, it still has the high-quality stamp of approval that you’d expect from this superb studio.

Dawn of Kings is pretty average in terms of RTP and max win although it’s a solid game.
