The Book of Dead GO Collect slot has 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 fixed paylines. As with other traditional payline slots, you need a certain number of matching symbols to appear from left to right on adjacent reels, beginning from the leftmost reel and across any of the 10 paylines. For more symbols, you need 3 or more, whilst just 2 (or more) are required for the 4 higher-value symbols.

With an ancient Egyptian theme, the Book of Dead GO Collect slot is a sequel to the iconic Book of Dead (released back in January 2016). 10 years on, it aims to follow on from one of the most popular slot games of all time.

Set at the entrance of an ancient tomb, you will notice the graphics are much sharper than the original game. Also, the soundtrack has changed and has more of a sweeping feel. I quite like it and feels like a Hans Zimmer score you find in Hollywood blockbusters.

On the reels, the low-value symbols are represented by A, K, Q, J and 10 royals. The high-value symbols include Horus (falcon god), Anubis (the god of death) Osiris (the god of the afterlife and fertility) and Rich Wilde (the intrepid explorer). The Rich Wilde symbol is the best paying, awarding 1, 10, 100 or 500 x your total bet for 2, 3, 4 or 5 across a payline.

Then you have the Tomb Scatter Wild symbol that will substitute for all symbols and uses the highest payout value of the highest paying symbol when part of a winning combination. Landing 3, 4 or 5 Tomb Scatter Wilds will pay 2, 20 or 200 x your total bet as well as triggering the free spins (more on this below). Free Spins

The Free Spins feature is triggered by landing 3 or more Tomb Scatter Wild symbols anywhere on the reels during a base game spin. With 3, 4 or 5 of them awarding a 2, 10 or 200 x bet payout, you’ll be rewarding with 10 free spins.

Once in, you’ll enter a tomb where the infamous ‘book’ randomly selected a special expanding symbol. When this symbol appears, it expands to fill the reel its on entirely. This allows to fill multiple or all reels with the same symbol. Below is a table highlighting the payout for filling all 5 reels with the same symbol:

• 10, J or Q: 100 x bet
• A or K: 150 x bet
• Horus or Anubis: 750 x bet
• Osiris: 200 x bet
• Rich Wilde: 5,000 x bet

During the feature, landing 3 or more Tomb Scatter Wild symbols will retrigger the feature, with 10 extra free spins awarded. The number of free spins is capped at 80.

Treasure Vault

Look out for Gold Staters attached on all symbols (except the Tomb Scatter Wild). The more Gold Staters collected in the base game, the higher your chances of triggering the Treasure Vault feature. For clarity, Gold Staters don’t appear during the Free Spins feature.

Once in, you begin with 3 re-spins: landing a Gold Stater will reset the re-spins tally to 3. Each Gold Stater is worth 1 to 5 x your total bet. You’ll also benefit from Bonus Staters:

Just over 10 years from the release of Book of Dead, Play ‘n GO has a lot to live up to in the Book of Dead GO Collect slot. Whilst it has an ancient Egyptian theme, the backdrop and soundtrack has changed which is a good thing in my opinion. I’m not sure hardcore fans of the original game will be pleased. The same symbols have been used which helps.

In the Free Spins feature, there is a randomly selected special expanding symbol. With a cap of 80 free spins, the key is to land a high-value special expanding symbol with Rich Wilde offering the highest max win potential. No changes there. I’m a little disappointed that there is a cap of 80 free spins (with retriggers) as the original game offers unlimited extra free spins, potentially.

Play ‘n GO has added a Hold & Win twist with the GO Collect mechanic. The Treasure Vault feature is triggered randomly when collecting Gold Staters in the base game. You’ll then benefit from re-spins with staters worth up to 5 x bet. The key are the Bonus Staters which are worth up to 500 x your total bet.   

With 10,000 x bet max wins, Book of Dead GO Collect offers double the max win potential of its predecessor but the game can provide 5,000 x bet payouts if you fill the reels with Rich Wilde symbols.

Whilst I relish playing sequels, I would have hoped that Play ‘n GO would have upped the ante significantly by offering higher value symbols, which in turn would have upped the max win potential in the free spins. The Hold & Win mechanic has proved popular with other slot studios but the potential rewards don’t do the Book of Dead ‘brand’ justice in my opinion.

With slot game sequels, you need to go much bigger and harder to make it stand out versus the popular original. Unfortunately, Book of Dead GO Collect doesn’t quite reach those heights.
