Casino Affordability Checks: Two Thirds of UK Players Would Not Provide Bank Statements

The confusion around affordability checks is a huge pain point for online casino punters. Read on to find out why you likely have nothing to worry about.
Casino Affordability Checks: Two Thirds of UK Players Would Not Provide Bank Statements
  • Recent YouGov poll commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council reveals 65% of UK punters would refuse to provide personal financial documents to a casino.
  • The finding highlights a growing disconnect between operators and their players - fuelled mainly by confusion.
  • Many players have been handing over documents unnecessarily, unaware they could simply ask for an explanation.

Nearly two thirds of UK bettors would refuse to hand over financial documents to casino sites.

That's the headline finding of a recent YouGov poll commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council.

The survey asked players whether they would provide bank statements or payslips as part of affordability checks.

My View

I'm not surprised at the lack of buy in from UK punters on this one. These affordability checks are creating uncertainty - but the truth is - they cause more confusion than actual real world problems. That's the bit that hasn't been explained to people properly.

Sixty-five per cent said no, a figure the BGC has used to argue the checks lack sufficient public buy-in.

The irony is that the UKGC has confirmed operators aren't actually required to request those documents at all.

UKGC Executive Director Tim Miller made clear that document requests go beyond what the regulator mandates from operators.

Players who have handed over bank statements may have done so without any legal obligation to do so.

The table below shows exactly how player perception diverges from what the UKGC actually requires of operators.

What Players Think is RequiredWhat the UKGC Actually Needs
Bank statementsNot required
PayslipsNot required
Source of funds explanationNot required
Background credit data checkYes - but only at ÂŁ150 net deposits
Responsible gambling promptOnly for a small minority of players

The BGC has written to the government requesting a formal review of how the framework is being implemented.

No changes to the mandatory rollout have been announced, with full compliance still required by Q3 2026.

OLBG Casino Expert David Coleman says the numbers reveal a trust deficit that operators have largely created themselves.

He said: “When 65% of players say they’d refuse to comply, that’s not a regulatory problem, it’s a communication failure.

"Casinos have been asking for things they don’t need from players who don’t understand their rights. That erodes trust fast, and trust is hard to rebuild.

"The industry needs to get its house in order before more players simply head offshore and outside consumer protection entirely.”

Affordability check rules are the same across the market, but the experience is not, with some casinos handling checks more quietly and efficiently than others.

I've reviewed how quickly these checks are resolved at UK casinos and what players are commonly asked to provide.
