  • Bookmakers increase Sunak's chance of being replaced as Chancellor to 45%
  • Southampton born Yorkshire MP is 2/1 to become Next Prime Minister After Boris Johnson
  • And just 7/4 to be the next Conservative Party Leader.

Rishi Sunak has served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2020, and ever since has been hailed as the natural successor to Boris Johnson to become Leader of the Conservative Party and quite possibly Prime Minister.

With all that is going on right now in political circles and media frenzy, the political betting markets are awash with activity and one market that has jumped out is Sunak to be replaced as Chancellor found on Smarkets.

This has to be intrinsically linked to the fate of Boris Johnson and Sunaks chance of replacing him, although as we have seen, there has been support for both Liz Truss and Jeremy Hunt in regards the Leaders position based on Boris Johnson's exit date.

Rishi Sunak to be Replaced as Chancellor in 2022

The betting is based on the odds and probability of Rishi Sunak being replaced as Chancellor of the Exchequer this year

Odds Probability
Nor Replaced 1.67 (3/5) 60.24%
Replaced 2.20 (6/5) 45.45%

Sunak's odds of being replaced as Chancellor are based more on his chance of stepping up to PM rather than vacating the position for other reasons. Although there remains a 60% chance he will last through 2022

To be PM on 1st Jan 2023

One would imagine that if Sunak were to leave his current position it would be most likely to step forward at the exit of Boris johnson, so betting on the UK Prime Minister on 1st January 2023, is another interesting market we found.

Rishi Sunak is 3/1 to be in that position, although Boris Johnson remains the 6/4 favourite to still be head of the Government on the date.

UK Prime Minister on 1st January 2023

Odds Probability
Boris Johnson 2.50 (6/4) 40.0%
Rishi Sunak 4.00 (3/1) 20.0%
Liz Truss 6.00 (5/1) 25.0%
Jeremy Hunt 15.0 (14/1) 6.25%

Bookmakers still fancy and are still seeing bets coming in that Boris Johnson will still be Prime Minister on January 1st 2023 - Offering a probability prediction of some 40% he maintains his position until at least then.
