Laila Cunningham Favourite to Win 2028 London Mayoral Election

The race to become the next Mayor of London in 2028 has taken an early twist as Laila Cunningham, the newly announced Reform UK candidate, has surged to the top of the betting market.

Despite Sadiq Khan winning a third term in 2024, odds from William Hill now show Cunningham leading the way, priced at 6/4 to claim the capital’s top political job.

The 2028 election may still be four years away, but early momentum and high-profile backing from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has seen bookmakers respond.

William Hill's latest market gives Cunningham a 40% chance of being the next London Mayor.

Who Is Laila Cunningham?

Laila Cunningham is a Westminster City Councillor who defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK in 2023.

Earlier this month, she was unveiled as Reform's official candidate for the 2028 London Mayoral Election, appearing at a press event alongside Nigel Farage.

Cunningham’s message is focused on law and order, pledging to launch an “all-out war on crime” and promising to be a “new sheriff in town”.

Her tough-on-crime stance and sharp rhetoric have clearly resonated with sections of the electorate and evidently, with early betting interest.

The visual of Cunningham flanked by “London Needs Reform” banners made headlines, setting the tone for a campaign that looks set to challenge the capital’s political status quo.

Will Sadiq Khan Run Again?

Sadiq Khan, the current Labour Mayor of London, made history in 2024 by winning a third consecutive term.

While he has not confirmed his intention to run in 2028, he remains in the betting at 11/4, suggesting confidence that he may yet seek a fourth term.

Khan remains a high-profile political figure, but Reform UK’s rise and potential Labour fatigue could pose new challenges if he does decide to stay in the race.

What the expert says...
Khan has name recognition and a strong core vote in London, but if Reform keeps gaining ground nationally and locally, this could be his toughest battle yet.

Other Contenders: Long Shots or Wildcards?

Several other names appear in the betting market, though none have officially declared their candidacy. These include:

Dawn Butler (12/1) – Labour MP and potential successor to Khan

Ant Middleton (12/1) – Former special forces soldier and TV presenter with outsider appeal

James Cleverly (14/1) – Senior Conservative cabinet minister with leadership ambitions

Boris Johnson (20/1) – Former London Mayor and PM, always a wildcard in political markets

While these names offer value in the speculative market, much will depend on party strategy and public sentiment closer to 2028.
