The Jeff Stelling Show with OLBG hits the road for a special live episode from Newbury, and it is packed with stories and opinion in a National League special.

Jeff is joined by two men with decades of pyramid experience: manager Phil Brown, and Dorking Wanderers owner-manager Mark White.

It is a warm, funny, at times seriously eye-opening hour of non-league and Football League folklore, and a timely one, with the National League, National League North and National League South all about to kick off.

Phil Brown finally puts the Manchester City team talk to bed

For years, the image of Phil Brown addressing his Hull City players on the pitch at half-time at the Etihad, 4-0 down on Boxing Day, has been one of the most talked-about moments in modern Premier League management. In this episode, he tells Jeff the full story, and the twist behind it.

"To be brutally honest, it's probably got me three or four jobs since," Brown admits. He reveals that just before kick-off, assistant Brian Horton pulled him aside to tell him two players had been out the night before and were "in no fit state to play."

With the team already unravelling, the on-pitch team talk was the alternative to a change of plan at 2.55pm.

Mark White's £12m Dorking dream

Alongside Brown, Dorking Wanderers owner-manager Mark White gives a candid insight into what it really takes to build a football club from Sunday League up. In 27 years, he estimates he has ploughed £10–12 million of his own money into the Dorking project.

Asked whether it has been money well spent, his answer is joyous: "That's my allotment, that's my watch collection, if you like, that's my hobby. Money well spent."

He also revisits Dorking's now-famous decision to broadcast his live pre-match and half-time team talks, even with the opposition manager watching, and touches on the "half a billion" content views the club racked up last year.

It's a fascinating case study in how a non-league club can punch massively above its weight through storytelling.
