Goalscorer Statistics

I took a look at goalscorers home and away, and the breakdown between them scoring in the 1st half or 2nd half.

Home and away football form and 1st half second half form are major considerations when betting on football.

Last season Southampton were 19th in the Home Table  PL19, W6, D3, L10, but 3rd In the Away Table PL 19, W9, D4, L6.

We also saw that Wolves performed dreadfully in the 1st half of games (19th in the 1st half table - PL38, W7, D14, L17), but reversed that stat in the second half - PL38, W18, D17, L3.

How is the team going to set up for today's game? Do they need a win or are they on a long winning run?

These instructions and how they go into a game is reflected by the goals their top strikers score and at what stage of the game a goal goes in.

The role the striker is asked to play will also have a bearing on his goals return.

Certain players are more likely to score their goals either home or away, this can often be determined by how good their team is at home or away,

It can also be determined by the type of player involved with many top strikers struggling for goals away from home even when their team does well away from home.

In Fernando Torres' first season at Liverpool, he scored a remarkable 24 league goals.

How many of those came at away grounds?

He only managed 3 away goals that season, meaning 87.5% of his goal haul came at Anfield.

This Season

So what about this season?

Who are the players to back and tip for goals at home and who should we be punting on away from home?

Who performs early in the game, and who leaves it late?

At the time of writing here are the top goalscorers in the league and includes H/A, 1ST HALF, 2ND HALF.

Player Appearances Goals  Home Goals Away Goals 1st Half  2nd Half Penalties
Dominic Calvert Lewin 9 10 5 5 5 5
Son Heung Min 9 9 2 7 2 7
Jamie Vardy 8 8 1 7 3 5 5
Mohamed Salah 8 8 4 4 5 3 4
Harry Kane 9 7 3 4 3 4 2
Patrick Bamford 9 7 1 6 1 6
Bruno Fernandez 8 6 2 4 3 3 3
Callum Wilson 8 6 4 2
6 3
Ollie Watkins 8 6 4 2 3 3 1
Danny Ings 7 5 2 3 3 2 1

If we look at the current stats we can see that Son, Vardy, Bamford are performing better away from home, with the others there is a fairly even split, albeit from a small 2020/21 season sample.

The table will be updated as we look for definitive goalscoring traits, for example:

Son is benefiting from Harry Kane playing deeper at Tottenham under Mourinho.

Kane is top of the assists at the time of writing, many with Son the main beneficiary.

Vardy as the commentators incessantly bang on about "plays on the shoulder" and is always the furthest player forward both home and away.

However, defences sit deeper at the King Power so there is less room for him to run into, away from home he naturally has more space.

Bamford is often the lone striker and has less support away from home from his teammates, the goals will be shared at home between players whereas away from Elland Road he will get the chances.

Goals By Half

The split of ALL EPL goals so far this season reads

First Half = 45.7%

Second Half = 54.3%

These percentages have remained fairly consistent over the seasons.

You will be more likely to see a goal scored in the second half.

With the top strikers scoring more in the second half, a HT bet on the top 10 to score at any time may reap rewards.

Obviously, you will need to research the state of play on each game the top 10 are involved in.

Formations Home and Away

The vast majority of teams in most seasons score more when playing at home than they do away.

They are expected to take the game to the opposition when playing at home, this results in more chances created for home teams.

Managerial Strategy
Has the manager added in an extra defender or midfielder to make sure they are not defeated?

There will be tweaks to the formations when away from home with a minimum aim of not losing.

This can result in a lone striker being asked to lead the line. The main striker in the team will get this solitary role.

It does mean fewer chances will be created, but when chances are created our lone striker will get the majority of them.

Penalties

Spot kicks are playing an increasing part of  EPL match results.

19 goals from the top 10 scorers have been penalties, with Vardy (5), Salah (4) Fernandez (3) leading the way.

Penalties Awarded?
Leicester after 9 games have been awarded 8 penalties, double the amount of any other team, and 8 more than Southampton and Everton.

Of the 265 goals so far scored, 35 have been penalties (13%)

Bamford, Calvert Lewin, and Son deserve extra praise with their goal return, as they do not take penalties regularly.

Other Leagues

These sorts of stats are reflected in other leagues
